J.D. Blackfoot, de son vrai nom Benjamin Franklin Van Dervort, est un auteur-compositeur-interprète américain né dans les années 1940 à Cleveland, Ohio. Il s’impose dès la fin des années 60 comme une voix singulière du rock psychédélique et folk narratif, mêlant mysticisme, spiritualité et un profond respect pour la culture amérindienne.

Il fonde au début de sa carrière un groupe portant son nom, J.D. Blackfoot, qui publie en 1970 l’album culte The Ultimate Prophecy, œuvre ambitieuse de rock psychédélique aux tonalités chamaniques. Sa voix profonde et théâtrale, sa plume visionnaire et ses compositions à tiroirs font de lui une figure atypique de la scène underground américaine.

C’est en 1974, avec l’album solo The Song of Crazy Horse, qu’il signe son œuvre maîtresse. Véritable fresque conceptuelle, l’album rend hommage au chef de guerre lakota Crazy Horse, figure emblématique de la résistance amérindienne au XIXe siècle. L’œuvre développe un récit puissant, entre ballades acoustiques et épopées électriques, porté par une orchestration riche et une intensité émotionnelle rare.

Peu médiatisé à sa sortie, l’album a depuis acquis un statut culte auprès des amateurs de rock narratif et engagé. J.D. J.D. Blackfoot, born Benjamin Franklin Van Dervort in the 1940s in Cleveland, Ohio, is an American singer-songwriter best known for his unique blend of psychedelic rock, folk, and narrative storytelling steeped in mysticism, spirituality, and deep respect for Native American culture.

He began his career in the late 1960s as the frontman of a self-named band, J.D. Blackfoot, which released the cult album The Ultimate Prophecy (1970), a compelling mix of psychedelic rock and shamanic overtones. With his dramatic voice and visionary songwriting, Blackfoot quickly became a respected figure in the American underground scene.

In 1974, he released his magnum opus, The Song of Crazy Horse. This concept album pays tribute to the legendary Lakota warrior Crazy Horse, symbol of Native resistance to American expansion. The album weaves a powerful narrative through acoustic folk passages and electric progressive rock movements, supported by lush orchestration and emotional depth.

Though it received little attention upon release, the album has since earned cult status among fans of poetic and spiritual rock. Blackfoot continued recording in the years that followed, maintaining a fiercely independent approach, deeply rooted in nature, spirituality, and indigenous reverence.
