Sweet Pain - Sweet Pain (1970)



The Sweet Bread group was formed in California by David Riordan and J. C. Phillips. The other members of this training are Carl Johnson (guitar), Bob Spalding (guitar), Frank Demme (bass), Marty Foltz (drums, percussion). The best moments of this first very consistent record include 'Joy', a long piece with its twin guitars, 'Richard and Me' and 'The Lover' which closes the album. Their music was composed mainly of West Coast rock with sophisticated vocal harmonies and interesting guitar solos with a melancholy instrumental track played on 12-string guitar.

Les autres membres de cette formation sont Carl Johnson (guitare), Bob Spalding (guitare), Frank Demme (basse), Marty Foltz (batterie, percussion). Les meilleurs moments  de ce premier enregistrement très cohérent comprennent 'Joy', un long morceau avec ses guitares jumelées , 'Richard and Me'  et 'The Lover' qui clôt l'album. Leur musique était principalement composée de rock West Coast avec des harmonies vocales sophistiquées et des solos de guitare intéressants dont une piste instrumentale mélancolique jouée à la guitare 12 cordes.

Floating Bridge - Floating Bridge (1969)




This American band formed in 1967 in Seattle (Washington) has decided to join the recording studio in 1969 for one album very oriented psyche. The result is truly a success with a superb cover of 'Hey Jude' (The Beatles) or a meddley 'Eight Miles Hhigh' (Byrds) / 'Paint It Black' (Stones), but also with compos personal to very sixties sounds accompanied by organ and guitars sometimes slightly acidic. A languorous blues with 'Gonna Lay Down and Die', 'You've Got The Power', a blues rock although nervous, or 'Crasckshot "hendrixienne of influence. Another remarkable album and unfortunately ignored !!

Ce groupe américain formé en 1967 à Seattle (Washington) s'est décidé à rejoindre les studios d'enregistrement en 1969 pour un seul album très orienté psyché. Le résultat est vraiment une réussite avec une superbe reprise de 'Hey Jude' (Beatles) ou encore un meddley 'Eight Miles Hhigh' (Byrds)/'Paint It Black' (Stones) , mais aussi avec des compos perso aux sonorités très sixties accompagnées d'orgue et de guitares parfois un peu acides. Un blues langoureux avec 'Gonna Lay Down and Die', 'You've Got The Power', un blues rock bien nerveux, ou encore 'Crasckshot", d'influence hendrixienne. Encore un album remarquable et hélas ignoré !!

If Led Zeppelin had not existed, no doubt Leaf Hound would have won the bet. Sharp riffs and screamed a hoarse voice, a flood of decibels ... everything is there to satisfy the lover of heavy rock. Yet Leaf Hound had no success, Peter French has gone join Atomic Rooster and Cactus. Mass production of blues-rock in the late 60's gave rise to an avalanche of contracts and records at the beginning of the next decade. The glorious emergence of the Free, Black Sabbath or Ten Years After was able to easily pass through very deserving groups whose rediscovery today the joy of collectors. Leaf Hound is one of them.

Si Led Zeppelin n'avait pas existé, nul doute que Leaf Hound aurait remporté la mise. Des riffs acérés, un chant hurlé et éraillé, un déferlement de décibels... tout est là pour satisfaire l'amateur de heavy rock. Et pourtant, Leaf Hound n'a eu aucun succès, Peter French s'en est allé rejoindre Atomic Rooster, puis Cactus. La production massive de blues-rock à la fin des 60's avait donné lieu à une véritable avalanche de contrats et d'enregistrements au début de la décennie suivante. La glorieuse émergence des Free, Black Sabbath ou Ten Years After a pu ainsi facilement faire passer au travers de très méritants groupes dont la re-découverte fait aujourd'hui la joie des collectionneurs. Leaf Hound est de ceux-là.

Drive-By Truckers - Dirty South (2004)



After several albums in the vein of country rock of the 80's, the Dirty South takes a slightly different direction, the pedal steel is gone, the rock is back and the stories now offer representations of life in the Deep South. While most of the songs on the last album were fictional stories, most of the 14 tracks by The Dirty South are talking about real people, namely the inhabitants of the region ravaged economically Muscle Shoals, Alabama, where all members of the group but one grew up. Hood, Cooley and Isbell delve into their past, emerging with a bitter portrait of a region that is angry, passionate and above all, ardently proud, as each song leaves indelible impression on the listener.

Après plusieurs albums dans la veine du country rock des 80's, ce Dirty South prend une direction légèrement différente, la pedal steel a disparu, le rock est de retour et les histoires offrent maintenant des représentations de la vie dans le Grand Sud. Alors que la majorité des chansons sur le dernier album étaient des récits de fiction, la plupart des 14 titres de The Dirty South parlent de vraies personnes, à savoir les habitants de la région ravagée économiquement de Muscle Shoals, Alabama, où tous les membres du groupe, sauf un, ont grandi. Cracker - Kerosene Hat (1993)




Cracker is an American rock band formed in 1991 by singer David Lowery and Johnny Hickman guitarist. Cracker adopts several styles like rock, post-grunge, country, blues and folk. Their music goes from soft ballads to energetic pieces. This album brought some freshness to the country-rock of breath in the late 80's by offering an alternative form that many have subsequently followed.

Cracker est un groupe de rock américain créé en 1991 par le chanteur David Lowery et le guitariste Johnny Hickman. Cracker adopte plusieurs styles comme le rock, le post-grunge, la country, le blues et le folk. Leur musique passe de douces ballades à des morceaux énergiques.
Cet album a apporté certaine fraîcheur au country-rock essoufflé à la fin des 80's en proposant une forme alternative que beaucoup ont par la suite suivie. 

1993

Wilco - A.M. (1995)



Some consider this first album of Wilco as their best. The fact is that the group is born, full of ideas, around the strong personality of Jeff Tweedy one of the two brains of the legendary Uncle Tupelo. Suddenly the music of this A.M. is gross, deliberately unpolished, with big nods to the Rolling Stones as the group does not hide cherish. A song like 'Casino Queen' leaves no doubt with his riff Keith Richards and vocals straight from Exile On Main Street. The compositions of Jeff Tweedy even those with a desire to make a difference with the electric country of his previous band, retain an influence that will remain sustainable in the next album. But his way to beef up his remarks by assaying guitars generously in fact a pure rock'n'roll album nasty and yet romantic. As evidence of softer songs like 'Should not Be Ashamed', 'Pick Up The Change' or 'It's Just That Simple', where emotion takes over blood shot. Tweedy and his group are exposed with more acoustic instruments - mandolin, banjo, pedal steel guitar - feelings and especially the more dreamy and pastoral moods.

Certains considèrent ce premier album de Wilco comme leur meilleur. Le fait est que le groupe vient de naître, bourré d'idées, autour de la forte personnalité de Jeff Tweedy l'une des deux têtes pensantes du légendaire Uncle Tupelo. Du coup la musique de ce A.M. est brute, volontairement mal dégrossie, avec de gros clins d'oeil vers les Rolling Stones que le groupe ne se cache pas de chérir. Une chanson comme 'Casino Queen' ne laisse aucun doute, avec son riff à la Keith Richards et ses choeurs tout droit issus de Exile On Main Street. Les compositions de Jeff Tweedy même si elles affichent une volonté de marquer la différence avec la country électrique de son précédent groupe, conservent une influence qui restera durable dans l'album suivant. Mais sa manière de muscler son propos en dosant les guitares avec générosité en fait un album de pur rock'n'roll teigneux et pourtant romantique. À preuve des chansons plus douces comme 'Shouldn't Be Ashamed', 'Pick Up The Change' ou 'It's Just That Simple', où l'émotion prend le pas sur le coup de sang. Tweedy et son groupe y exposent avec des instruments plus acoustiques – mandolines, banjos, pedal steel guitar – des sentiments et surtout des humeurs plus rêveuses et plus pastorales.

1995

Green On Red - Gas Food Lodging (1985)




From the first track, the fake anthem 'That's What Dreams Are For', we feel that the sound of Green On Red considerably refined while maintaining the dilapidated appearance, looser makes all his strength. 'Black River', harmonica and country-rock forces, even closer to Green On Red The Band cited above. But a more rock'n'roll verve sprinkled immediately after the very aggressive 'Hair Of The Dog'. Against-balanced by the pop-song that follows, 'This Is Know' sublimated by the keyboards of Chris Cacabas. Dan Stuart sings and glorifies an America populated Kerouac more pathetic every clueless as each other. Green On Red evolves it must be remembered in the Reagan era. A time oh rotten and violent. Totally abandoning its primary véillités psychedelia, Green On Red succeeds with Gas Food Lodging album oh significant indie rock 80s For though unnoticed at the time, Gas Food Lodging subsequently became a continuous source inspiration for Wilco, Giant Sand and the whole alternative-country scene.


Dès le premier titre, le faux hymne 'That's What Dreams Are For', on sent que le son des Green On Red s'est considérablement affiné tout en conservant cet aspect déglingué, looser qui fait toute sa force. 'Black River', harmonica et country-rock oblige, rapproche encore plus Green On Red de The Band cité plus haut. Mais une verve plus rock'n'roll rejaillit tout de suite après avec le très hargneux 'Hair Of The Dog'. Contre-balancé par la pop-song qui suit, 'This Is Know' sublimée par les claviers de Chris Cacabas. Dan Stuart chante et glorifie une Amérique à la Kerouac peuplée de paumés tous plus pathétiques les uns que les autres. Green On Red évolue faut-il le rappeler à l'époque reaganienne. Une époque ô combien pourrie et violente.  Abandonnant totalement ses véillités primaires de psychédélisme, Green On Red réussit avec Gas Food Lodging un album ô combien important du rock indé des années 80. Car bien que passé inaperçu à l'époque, Gas Food Lodging est devenu par la suite une source continue d'inspiration pour Wilco, Giant Sand et toute la scène alternative-country.

1985

Lindisfarne - Best Of



Lindisfarne is a British folk rock band from Newcastlequi has had great success in the early 1970s, placing three albums in the Top 10 in the UK. Their second album Fog On The Tyne became No. 1 in sales next year, while the single "Meet Me on the Corner 'was ranked 5th. Lindisfarne is then the object of attention, some even calling the group of new Beatles, a reputation that it can not be maintained. In 1973, after the relative failure of the album Dingly Dell, internal tensions lead to the replacement of several members of the group and the new training, failing to regain the level of the original, separated in 1975.

Lindisfarne est un groupe de folk rock britannique originaire de Newcastlequi a connu un grand succès au début des années 1970, plaçant trois albums dans le Top 10 au Royaume-Uni.
Leur second album Fog On The Tyne est devenu no 1 des ventes l'année suivante, tandis que le single 'Meet Me on the Corner' se classait 5e. Lindisfarne est alors l'objet de toutes les attentions, certains qualifiant même le groupe de nouveaux Beatles, une réputation à laquelle il ne peut se maintenir. En 1973, après l'échec relatif de l'album Dingly Dell, des tensions internes entraînent le remplacement de plusieurs membres du groupe, et la nouvelle formation, échouant à retrouver le niveau de l'originale, se sépare en 1975.


Ace - Five-A-Side (1974)




Five-A-Side (1974) is the most representative albums of Ace and one that did the most talking, because of the presence of How Long, title that very well figured in the US charts (3) and UK ( 20). pub-rock formation dominated by the soulful vocals and keyboards future of Mike & The Mechanics, Paul Carrack, Ace is not a course more rowdy, even if the training is popular in the British pub-rock concert of the moment. His trademark is the discretion. Perhaps too because, despite talented musicians whose paths are revealing, despite catchy melodies ( 'Time Is not Long'), good titles ( 'Rock And Roll Runaway'), superb harmonies, writing acid and a very soft and Americanized style, Ace pierces into a register in which Eagles still hand. 'How Long' is a little lifesaver Ace, a group that did not leave a lasting impression, although having real potential to do better.

Five-A-Side (1974) est le plus représentatif des albums de Ace et celui qui a fait le plus parler, en raison de la présence de How Long, titre qui a très bien figuré dans les charts US (3) et UK (20). Formation de pub-rock dominée par le chant soul et les claviers du futur Mike & The Mechanics, Paul Carrack, Ace n'a pas un parcours des plus tapageurs, même si cette formation est populaire dans le concert pub-rock british du moment. Sa marque de fabrique, c'est la discrétion. Peut-être trop car, en dépit de musiciens talentueux et dont les parcours sont révélateurs, malgré des mélodies accrocheuses ('Time Ain't Long'), de bons titres ('Rock And Roll Runaway'), de superbes harmonies, une écriture acide et un style très doux et américanisé, Ace ne perce dans un registre sur lequel Eagles a encore la main. 'How Long' est un peu la bouée de sauvetage d'Ace, groupe qui n'a pas laissé un souvenir impérissable, bien qu'ayant un vrai potentiel pour faire mieux.

Ian Matthews - Journey From Gospel Oak (1971)




In 1971 Ian Matthews Plainsong founded a new group, but before embarking on the adventure, it records in record time (5 days!) This Journey from Gospel Oak prelude to what follows, namely his departure for California . Ian is increasingly attracted by what is happening across the Atlantic and especially on the west coast! Not surprising to find here moultes times from the Californian artist index such as Gene Clark, Gram Parsons or Merle Haggard. Although registered in England with local musicians, Andy Roberts (Plaisong), Jerry Donohue and Pat Donaldson (Fotheringhay), this work sounds could not be more Californian country-rock. Production impeccable found there which is customary Matthews: air vocal and instrumental virtuosity.

En 1971 Ian Matthews fonde un nouveau groupe Plainsong, mais avant de se lancer dans l'aventure, il enregistre en un temps record (5 jours!) ce Journey from Gospel Oak prélude à ce qui va suivre, à savoir son départ pour la Californie. Ian est de plus en plus attiré par ce qui se passe outre-atlantique et surtout sur la côte ouest ! Pas surprenant de trouver ici moultes reprises venant du répertoire d'artistes californiens tels que Gene Clark, Gram Parsons ou Merle Hagard.  Bien qu'enregistré en Angleterre avec des musiciens du cru, Andy Roberts (Plaisong), Jerry Donohue et Pat Donaldson (Fotheringay), cette oeuvre sonne on ne peut plus country-rock californien. Van Morrison - Astral Weeks (1968)



Astral Weeks is the second solo album by Van Morrison, recorded at 23 in 1968. This is a totally unique object, unclassifiable in terms of musical style, resistant to any kind of comparison. 4 ingredients at least explain this result: unusual compositions, a vocal performance consistently located on the razor's edge, a staggering contribution bassist Richard Davis, and finally Larry Fallon of the goldsmith work for string arrangements, brass and harpsichord. In any 45 minutes totally improbable music in 1968 as today. The 8 songs are all memorable, especially Astral Week 'with its final transfigured by the strings,' Beside You 'lament wobbly and baroque, nearly hysterical,' Sweet Thing 'and his tremendous jubilation,' Madame George 'point the emotional highlight of the album, and finally 'Slim Slow Slider bizarre and disturbing conclusion leaves the listener to the output of a world that is hidden permanently. When you listen to 'Astral Weeks', appears momentarily resonance with something intangible and shared in the depths of our human condition.

Astral Weeks est le 2ème album solo de Van Morrison, enregistré à 23 ans en 1968. C'est un objet totalement singulier, inclassable en terme de courant musical, rebelle à toute forme de comparaison. 4 ingrédients au moins expliquent ce résultat: des compositions hors du commun, une performance vocale constamment située sur le fil du rasoir, une contribution stupéfiante du contrebassiste Richard Davis, et enfin le travail d'orfèvre de Larry Fallon pour les arrangements de cordes, cuivres et clavecin. En tout 45 minutes de musique totalement improbable en 1968 comme aujourd'hui. Les 8 morceaux sont tous mémorables, notamment 'Astral Week' avec son final transfiguré par les cordes, 'Beside You' complainte bancale et baroque, proche de l'hystérie, 'Sweet Thing' et sa jubilation formidable, 'Madame George' point d'orgue émotionnel de l'album, et pour finir 'Slim Slow Slider' conclusion bizarre et dérangeante qui laisse l'auditeur à la sortie d'un monde qui se dérobe définitivement. Quand on écoute 'Astral Weeks', apparaît momentanément une résonance avec quelque chose d'impalpable et de partagé au fin fond de toutes nos conditions humaines.

Dan Fogelberg - Souvenirs (1974)



Should we believe in you damn to gather in the main studio Eagles (Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Randy Meisner and Joe Walsh), Gerry Beckley (founder of America), Joe Lala (percussionist for Stills and Manassas, among others), Graham Nash, Russ Kunkel, Paul Harris and Al Perkins? Obviously, Dan Fogelberg does not leave insensible the middle of the rock, and two years after the huge Home Free (1972), he signed a long term contract with his new employer Epic Records (CBS), kicking his budding partnership with this Gift ( 1974), produced by Joe Walsh. Music criticism is not too highly of it yet very good record, starting with a very convincing 'Part Of The Plan'. And all titles that follow are the same level. The melodies are sweet and precious, brilliant voice, writing in place, the interpretation more sober. It is perfectly balanced, effective.

Faut-il que l'on croit sacrément en vous pour réunir dans un studio l'essentiel des Eagles (Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Randy Meisner et Joe Walsh), Gerry Beckley (fondateur d'America), Joe Lala (percussionniste pour Stills et Manassas, entre autres), Graham Nash, Russ Kunkel, Paul Harris et Al Perkins ? Visiblement, Dan Fogelberg ne laisse pas insensible le milieu du rock et, deux ans après l'énorme Home Free (1972), il signe un contrat longue durée avec son nouvel employeur Epic Records (CBS), entamant son partenariat naissant avec ce Souvenirs (1974), produit par Joe Walsh. La critique musicale n'a pas trop fait l'éloge de ce disque pourtant très bon, démarrant par un très convaincant 'Part Of The Plan'. Et tous les titres qui suivent sont du même niveau. Les mélodies sont douces et précieuses, la voix brillante, l'écriture bien en place, l'interprétation des plus sobres. C'est parfaitement dosé, efficace.

Aztec Two-Step - Aztec Two-Step (1972)




Should the damn one believes in Fort you nice example of singer / songwriter folk-rock of the early 70s, the duo Aztec Two Step, consisting of Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman, was formed in 1971 after Title title, beautiful vocal harmonies argument over subtle interplay of acoustic guitars hushed and cozy atmosphere that emanates from this beautiful debut album. Fans of James Taylor, Simon and Garfunkel and Seals & Crofts, you can only be seduced by this production licked, real nugget of soft rock music.

Fort agréable exemple de chanteurs/compositeurs folk-rock du début des années 70, le duo Aztec Two Step, constitué de Rex Fowler et Neal Schulman, s'est formé en 1971. Titre après titre, la beauté des harmonies vocales dispute au subtil jeu des guitares sèches l'ambiance feutrée et cosy qui émane de ce magnifique premier album. Fans de James Taylor, Simon and Garfunkel et Seals & Crofts, vous ne pouvez qu'être séduits par cette production léchée, véritable pépite de la soft rock music.

Simon And Garfunkel - Bridge Over Trouble Water (1970)



Grammy award for best album of the year and biggest selling of 1970 with more than five million copies in ten months there than in the US, and # 1 for ten consecutive weeks, Bridge Over Troubled Water is album of superlatives, and remains one of the greatest drives in the history of popular music. Paul Simon has outdone lyrically and melodically to this work which paradoxically marked the end of his association with Art Garfunkel, following dissension during its gestation. The same folk and folk rock are stored in the attic, and entire musical ambition and Paul Simon writing art unfold. The grandiose 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' sets the tone. The top of the album is reached with the sublime 'The Boxer' and melodic ideas on the chorus, verse and bridge, its punctuation harmonica riffs, and 'lie-la-lie' ad lib repeated symbolic. For once, the French public was not passed by this feat, placing the main title No. 1 in July, while the charming 'Cecilia' and the exotic Peruvian 'El Condor Pasa' embellished also summer 1970. for the grand finale, the duo paid tribute to their main inspirers vocal side, the Everly Brothers, resuming faithfully in a fake live version their first hit, 'Down with Love' (1957).

Grammy award pour le meilleur album de l’année et plus grosse vente de 1970 avec plus de cinq millions de copies vendues en dix mois rien qu’aux Etats-Unis, et n°1 pendant dix semaines consécutives, Bridge Over Troubled Water est l’album des superlatifs, et demeure l’un des plus grands disques de l’histoire de la musique populaire. Paul Simon s’est surpassé lyriquement et mélodiquement pour cette œuvre qui marquait paradoxalement la fin de son association avec Art Garfunkel, à la suite de dissensions pendant sa gestation. Le folk et même le folk rock sont remisés au grenier, et toute l’ambition musicale et l’art d’écriture de Paul Simon se déploient.  Le grandiose 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' donne le ton. Le sommet de l’album est atteint avec le sublime 'The Boxer' et ses trouvailles mélodiques sur les refrain, couplets et pont, ses ponctuations de riffs d’harmonica, et ses 'lie-la-lie' symboliques répétés ad lib. Pour une fois, le public français n’était pas passé à côté de ce tour de force, plaçant le titre principal n°1 en juillet, tandis que le charmant 'Cecilia' et l’exotique péruvien 'El Condor Pasa' embellissaient eux aussi l’été 1970. Pour terminer en beauté, le duo rendait hommage à leurs inspirateurs principaux côté vocal, les Everly Brothers, en reprenant fidèlement dans une fausse version live leur premier tube, 'Bye Bye Love' (1957).

Seals & Crofts - Diamond Girl (1973)




Diamond Girl is generating two tubes, the title song which reached sixth place on the charts US and 'You May Never Pass This Way Again'. Other titles deserve shown them great interest. This is the case of the moving ballad Ruby And Billie Lee, a piece written for their wives that this diamond is offered. Their Baha'i faith is found in 7 minutes of 'Nine Houses' with oriental notes (good performance Dash Crofts on electric mandolin) and 'Intone My Servant', the most anonymous of this directory, but not uninteresting and mouth- hole provided. With 'Standing On A Mountain Top', more country-rock, folk-pop and that is the envy of dancing like a madman, the Texas couple has a flashback, back when he played in the Fields ( from 1958 to 1965). It is this period that serves as frame 'Dust On My Saddle'. And then there is this wonderful 'Jessica', too concise to appreciate the very substance, the pleasant 'It's Gonna Come Down (On You)', 'Wisdom', which detonates in this context but which closes this disc ( sax there is the star) on a jazzy note. All that is firmly rooted in the folk-rock production of the seventies and it was Louie Shelton that we owe it sound so sophisticated that is the trademark of Seals & Crofts.

D'autres titres méritent qu'on leur témoigne un grand intérêt. C'est le cas de l'émouvante ballade Ruby And Billie Lee, un morceau écrit pour leurs épouses auxquelles ce diamant est offert. Leur foi bahaïste se retrouve dans les 7 minutes d'un 'Nine Houses' aux notes orientales (belle prestation de Dash Crofts à la mandoline électrique) et 'Intone My Servant', le plus anonyme de ce répertoire, mais pas inintéressant et bouche-trou pour autant. Avec 'Standing On A Mountain Top', plus country-rock, folk-pop et qui suscite l'envie de danser comme un damné, le couple texan s'offre un retour en arrière, du temps où il évoluait au sein des Champs (de 1958 à 1965). C'est cette même période qui sert de trame à 'Dust On My Saddle'. Et puis, il y a ce merveilleux 'Jessica', beaucoup trop concis pour en apprécier la substantifique moelle, le plaisant 'It's Gonna Come Down (On You)', 'Wisdom', qui détone dans ce contexte mais qui clôture ce disque (le sax y tient la vedette) sur une note très jazzy. Tout ça est solidement ancré dans la production folk-rock des seventies et c'est à Louie Shelton que l'on doit ce son si perfectionné qui est la marque de fabrique de Seals & Crofts.
