Too Much -Too Much (1971)

Too Much originated in the port city of Kobe, where they sucked up all kinds of wester music arriving on boats from the States and the U.K.The band derived their name from a rock festival of the same name that took place in Kyoto near the end of 1970 featuring the awesome Blues Creation as one of the performing acts. Yet another group that released one album and then disintegrated. It's too bad, this album captures you right from the gate with a sonic wall the does start out a bit like Sabbath minus the vocals, and ends on a 12 minute psychedelic type jam.

Too Much est originaire de la ville portuaire de Kobe, où ils ont aspiré toutes sortes de musique d'ouest arrivant sur des bateaux des États-Unis et du Royaume-Uni. Le groupe tire son nom d'un festival de rock du même nom qui a eu lieu à Kyoto en 1970 et mettant en vedette l'impressionnant Blues Creation. Encore un autre groupe qui a sorti un album puis s'est désintégré. C'est dommage, cet album vous capture directement à la porte avec un mur sonique, ça commence un peu comme Sabbath moins les voix, et se termine sur un jam de type psychédélique de 12 minutes.

Ultimate Spinach - Behold & See (1968)

The Spinach's self-titled debut album is now considered a psychedelic classic, but it's the group's second record, Behold and See, that is perhaps their finest achievement. Ostensibly a concept album, it's centered around lead singer/songwriter/keyboardist/guitarist Ian Bruce-Douglas' cynical worldview. He skewers "normal" society with all the fervor of Zappa and all the surreality (and insanity) of Bob Markley on songs like "Visions of Your Reality" and "Suite: Genesis of Beauty." Add in the lush, floating vocals of Barbara Jean Hudson, fuzz guitar and some great late-60s psych jangle and you've got the formula for an unhinged classic that stands up to the best of the non-coastal psych sounds of the late-60s. 

Le premier album éponyme de Spinach est maintenant considéré comme un classique psychédélique, mais c'est le deuxième album du groupe, Behold and See, qui est peut-être leur plus belle réalisation. Ostensiblement un concept album , il est centré autour de la vision du monde cynique du chanteur / compositeur / claviériste / guitariste Ian Bruce-Douglas. Il brocarde la société "normale" avec toute la ferveur de Zappa et toute la surréalité (et la folie) de Bob Markley sur des chansons comme "Visions of Your Reality" et "Suite: Genesis of Beauty" en quatre parties. Ajoutez à cela les vocaux luxuriants et flottants de Barbara Jean Hudson,  la guitare fuzz et certains psych jangle de la fin des années 60 et vous avez la formule d'un classique déséquilibré qui résiste aux meilleurs sons psychédéliques de la fin des années 60.

Reaction - Reaction (1971)

Reaction were a one album German band, recording appealing hard rock/early metal at a time when their nation was overflowing with that sort of thing. This is isn't mind blowingly heavy or anything, but the guitar firepower and sound is certainly there. It is an extremely consistently very good album, recommended to hard rock fans. If you like early 70s heavy underground, give this a listen.

Reaction était un groupe allemand d'un seul album, enregistrant du hard rock/ metal à l'époque où leur pays débordait de ce genre de choses. Ce n'est pas totalement décoiffant ni dès innovant, mais la puissance de feu de la guitare et le son sont certainement là. C'est un très bon album extrêmement cohérent, recommandé aux fans de hard rock. Si vous aimez le son heavy underground des années 70, écoutez-le.

Wizard - Wizard (1971)

Wizard were an American psychedelic/hard rock band, which formed in 1970 in Tampa, Florida and disbanded 16 months after the formation.Wizard released just one studio album which went unnoticed.The band was touring in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Michigan, and Illinois, opening for Iron Butterfly, Chicago, Mountain, and Rod Stewart, among others. At the Goose Lake Festival, outside Detroit, they caught attention of Decca Records' Bob Fletcher who took the group to Atlanta's LeFevre Sound Studiosfor a recording session. The Original Wizard, the band's first and only album, released in 1971 on Peon Records.

Fire - The Magic Shoemaker (1971)

London trio Dave Lambert, Dick Dufall and Bob Voice had impressed the Beatles’ Apple label sufficiently to score a deal that resulted in the classic psych A-side “Father’s Name Is Dad”. The marriage was not a happy one, though, and Fire soon found themselves at odds with the music industry at large. Retiring to the suburbs, Lambert spent a year writing and demo-ing the songs for The Magic Shoemaker, based around a whimsical children’s bedtime story in which a shoemaker cobbles together a pair of shoes that unexpectedly allow the wearer to fly.

Le trio londonien Dave Lambert, Dick Dufall et Bob Voice ont suffisamment impressionné le label Apple des Beatles pour conclure un accord qui a donné naissance au classique psych-A "Father's Name Is Dad". Cependant, le mariage ne fut pas heureux et Fire se retrouva bientôt en désaccord avec l'industrie musicale en général. Retraité en banlieue, Lambert passa un an à écrire et à démo-rer les chansons de The Magic Shoemaker, autour d'une histoire fantaisiste où les cordonniers fabriquent une paire de chaussures qui permettent à celui qui les porte de voler.

Maypole - Maypole (1971)

Formed in Baltimore in late 1969, Maypole released their debut LP on Colossus in 1971 and their sound was soon compared to Cream, Iron Butterfly, Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix. Bluesy hard psych vibes, strong melodies and nice group harmonies are the magical ingredients that help making this record an amazing piece of hard rock music. Their label's closure and a relocation to Holland would lead to the band's break-up in 1972, but this outstanding album sounds today as powerful as the day it came out.

Formé à Baltimore à la fin de 1969, Maypole a sorti son premier album sur Colossus en 1971 et leur son a rapidement été comparé à Cream, Iron Butterfly, Led Zeppelin et Jimi Hendrix. Bluesy vibes psychiques fortes, mélodies fortes et harmonies de groupe sympa sont les ingrédients magiques qui aident à faire de ce disque une découverte étonnante dans le domaine du hard rock. La fermeture de leur label et une relocalisation en Hollande conduiront à la rupture du groupe en 1972, mais cet album exceptionnel semble aujourd'hui aussi puissant que le jour de sa sortie.

Gold - Mission Rock (1971)

Gold started out as a San Francisco garage band. They slowly developed into a top notch performing group that caught the attention of Bill Graham. Bill had them appear at an audition night then hired them to open a Fillmore-West show for Mike Bloomfield. Later that same year they opened shows at Winterland for Ten Years After, Big Brother and the Holding Company and Hot Tuna. The year before they appeared on a show with Loose Gravel and Mike Wilhelm, Big Brother and Full Tilt Boogie with Janis Joplin singing with both bands at a Hell's Angels party in San Rafael.Gold acquired the services of two outstanding singers - Robin Sinclair previously with Saloom-Sinclair and Bob Golden who played Berger in the Chicago production of Hair. The band also featured outstanding guitar work from Joe Bajza .

Gold a commencé comme un groupe de garage de San Francisco. Ils ont lentement évolué en un groupe de premier ordre qui a attiré l'attention de Bill Graham. East Of Eden - Mercator Projected (1969)

East of Eden was a British band that existed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and released a handful of albums. 1969's Mercator Projected is their first offering, and also regarded as their best. This album was originally released on Deram Records, the same label that gave us the Moody Blues The band didn't have a steady lineup, but on this album, the group consisted of violinist and flutist Dave Arbus, saxist Ron Caines, guitarist and vocalist Geoff Richardson, bassist Steve York and drummer Dave LaFont. Dave Arbus happened to be the same guy who played violin on The Who's classic "Baba O'Reilly" (aka "Teenage Wasteland"), by the way.  The whole album is a fascinating combination of psych, Middle Eastern influences, early prog rock, and jazz rock. 

East of Eden était un groupe britannique qui existait à la fin des années 1960 et au début des années 1970, et a sorti une poignée d'albums. Mercator Projected est leur première production, et également considéré comme leur meilleure. Cet album a été initialement publié sur Deram Records, le même label qui nous a donné le Moody Blues. Le groupe n'a pas eu une gamme stable, mais sur cet album, il se composait du violoniste et flûtiste Dave Arbus, du saxophoniste Ron Caines, du guitariste et chanteur Geoff Richardson, du bassiste Steve York et du batteur Dave LaFont.
