Toe Fat - Toe Fat Two (1971)

Toe Fat formed in 1969, right after the release of Hensley's Head Machine L.P. In Fact, the Toe Fat album is The Gods under a different name (including John Glascock, Allen Kendall, Cliff Bennett). Toe Fat was signed to the record label Rare Earth in the U.S., in the U.K. they signed to EMI who released thei eponymous debut on the Parlaphone label, and the second on Regal Zonophone. The album flopped commercially but gained considerable critical praise. They were booked on a tour supporting Derek and the Dominos in the U.S. Hensley quit the band to join Uriah Heep and Kendall joined Jethro Tull. Johnathan Peel produced their second album Toe Fat Two, after hearing the band on several BBC radio sessions. However, this album flopped as well despite more airtime and a successful U.S. tour to promote it. Following these successive failures, the label told the band they could no longer fund them.

Geronimo Black – Geronimo Black (1972)

Geronimo Black was formed by former Mothers of Invention drummer Jimmy Carl Black in 1970, shortly after Frank Zappa broke up the original Mothers. Named after his youngest son, Geronimo Black was Black's band all the way, although he was one of two lead singers and everyone in the band contributed to the songwriting. Besides Black on drums and vocals and his Mothers bandmate Bunk Gardner on keyboards , the group also included sax player Tjay Cantrelli (who had previously been in the second lineup of Love), guitarist and singer Denny Walley (who ironically would later work for Frank Zappa for several years in the late '70s and early '80s), bassist Tom Leavey, and drummer and keyboardist Andy Cahan (who would later join another set of ex-Zappaites, Flo & Eddie).

Smokestack Lightnin' - Off The Wall (1969)

Smokestack Lightnin' was an American rock band of the mid-1960s, which frequently played at the famed Sunset Strip club Whiskey A Go Go. They appeared in the 1968 film Dreams of Glass and their 1969 album, Off the Wall, gained some respect over the years since the group disbanded in 1970.

Smokestack Lightnin 'était un groupe de rock américain du milieu des années 1960, qui jouait fréquemment au célèbre club de Sunset Strip Whiskey A Go Go. Ils sont apparus dans le film Dreams of Glass en 1968 et leur album 1969, Off the Wall, a gagné un certain respect au fil des ans depuis la dissolution du groupe en 1970.

Freedom Hawk - Into Your Mind (2015)

No question that "Into Your Mind" is, in its songwriting and construction and in the stylistic breadth it covers, a step forward for Virginia Beach heavy rockers. Freedom Hawk reinforces the classic metal and heavy rock influences under which they’ve been working all along (Ozzy, Fu Manchu, etc.) while also pushing ahead into new ground, subtly psychedelic but still woven around earthy and traditional structures.

Il ne fait aucun doute que "Into Your Mind" est un pas en avant pour les rockers de Virginia Beach, dans son écriture et sa construction et dans l'ampleur stylistique qu'il couvre. Freedom Hawk renforce les influences classiques du métal et du heavy rock (Ozzy, Fu Manchu, etc.) tout en continuant à avancer dans de nouveaux horizons, subtilement psychédéliques mais toujours tissés autour de structures terreuses et traditionnelles.

Ruby The Hatchet - Aurum (2015)

Forging their music in the vein of stoner rock, Black Sabbath, Clutch and Kyuss, Ruby The Hatchet aim for the sun and reach far beyond. They aren't reinventing the wheel, but where they separate themselves from so many others, is in the songwriting department as well as in the instrumentation. Combined with a no bullshit attitude, Silent Monolith are miles ahead of so many others.

Forgeant leur musique dans la veine du rock stoner, dans le style de Black Sabbath, Clutch et Kyuss, Ruby The Hatchet vise le soleil et va bien au-delà. Ils ne réinventent pas la poudre, mais là où ils se distinguent de tant d'autres, c'est dans la composition de chansons aussi bien que dans l'instrumentation. Combiné avec une attitude parfaitement relâchée, Ruby The Hatchet est en avance sur de nombreux autres.

Dirty Sweet - ... Of Monarchs And Beggars (2007)

Formed in 2003, Dirty Sweet found an immediate audience of rock-loving fans just months after their inception, touring as main support for Jimmy Eat World. Winning the award for Best New Rock & Roll Band at the 2005 San Diego Music Awards, as well as their tireless performances to packed houses further encouraged the group to begin recording their debut. And here it is ...Of Monarchs and Beggars.

Formé en 2003, Dirty Sweet a trouvé un public immédiat de fans de rock juste quelques mois après leur création, en tournée en tant que soutien principal pour Jimmy Eat World. En remportant le prix du meilleur groupe de New Rock & Roll aux San Diego Music Awards 2005, ainsi que leurs performances inlassables dans des salles combles, ils ont encouragé le groupe à commencer à enregistrer leurs débuts. Et voilà le résultat ... Of Monarchs and Beggars.

Iron Bridge Band - Road Not Taken (2013)

The Iron Bridge Band’s latest release, Road Not Taken, features plenty of lead guitar riffs and solos like we like them. Lead guitarist Steve Walsh consistently delivers fast and edgy moves, piling onto what’s already an impressive sound. Road Not Taken allows classic rock inspirations while leaving room to incorporate modern concepts that sound fresh and unique. Road Not Taken goes back to a time when rock music was still heavily influenced by the blues. 

Le dernier opus du groupe Iron Bridge Band, "Road Not Taken", propose de nombreux riffs et solos de guitare comme on les aime. Le guitariste Steve Walsh livre constamment des mouvements rapides et audacieux, en les empilant sur ce qui est déjà un son impressionnant. Road Not Taken permet des inspirations rock classiques tout en laissant de la place pour incorporer des concepts modernes qui sonnent frais et uniques. Mothership - High Strangeness (2017)

There’s plenty to be said for the direction rock music has moved in since bands like Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top and Hawkwind began, but there’s undeniably something comforting about the classics as well. On their third full-length album, High Strangeness, Mothership demonstrate that they can have a foot in both worlds — vintage and modern — and end up with a quality result.

Il y a beaucoup à dire pour la direction que la musique rock a prise depuis que des groupes comme Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top et Hawkwind ont commencé, mais il y a indéniablement quelque chose de réconfortant avec les classiques. Sur leur troisième album complet, "High Strangeness", Mothership démontre qu'ils peuvent avoir un pied dans les deux mondes - vintage et moderne - et se retrouver avec un résultat de qualité.
