Geronimo Black was formed by former Mothers of Invention drummer Jimmy Carl Black in 1970, shortly after Frank Zappa broke up the original Mothers. Named after his youngest son, Geronimo Black was Black's band all the way, although he was one of two lead singers and everyone in the band contributed to the songwriting. Besides Black on drums and vocals and his Mothers bandmate Bunk Gardner on keyboards , the group also included sax player Tjay Cantrelli (who had previously been in the second lineup of Love), guitarist and singer Denny Walley (who ironically would later work for Frank Zappa for several years in the late '70s and early '80s), bassist Tom Leavey, and drummer and keyboardist Andy Cahan (who would later join another set of ex-Zappaites, Flo & Eddie).

Geronimo Black a été formé par l'ancien batteur des Mothers of Invention Jimmy Carl Black en 1970, peu de temps après que Frank Zappa ait dissous les Mothers originales. Forging their music in the vein of stoner rock, Black Sabbath, Clutch and Kyuss, Ruby The Hatchet aim for the sun and reach far beyond. They aren't reinventing the wheel, but where they separate themselves from so many others, is in the songwriting department as well as in the instrumentation. Combined with a no bullshit attitude, Silent Monolith are miles ahead of so many others.

Winning the award for Best New Rock & Roll Band at the 2005 San Diego Music Awards, as well as their tireless performances to packed houses further encouraged the group to begin recording their debut. And here it is ...Of Monarchs and Beggars.

There’s plenty to be said for the direction rock music has moved in since bands like Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top and Hawkwind began, but there’s undeniably something comforting about the classics as well. On their third full-length album, High Strangeness, Mothership demonstrate that they can have a foot in both worlds — vintage and modern — and end up with a quality result.
