Les Ballin' Jack ont formé un groupe multiracial en 1969 après avoir suivi l’ascension vers la gloire de leur ami d’enfance, Jimi Hendrix. Bien qu’ils n’aient jamais atteint le même niveau de notoriété, leur premier album s’est toutefois attiré le respect des afficionados du rock, la plupart des titres étant joué lors des premières parties de Jimi Hendrix qu’ils assurèrent sur la tournée de Cry Of Love en 1969. Leur musique est très variée  : country, soul, rock, blues ... mais il s'en dégage une forte puissance R&B dont le son est très caractéristique de la fin des sixties.

Formé à Seattle à la fin des années 1960, Ballin' Jack est un groupe de rock cuivré qui s’inscrit dans le sillage de Blood, Sweat & Tears et Chicago. Mêlant rock, soul, funk et jazz, leur son est porté par une section de cuivres efficace et des grooves entraînants. Leur premier album éponyme sorti en 1970 reflète bien cette fusion musicale, avec des morceaux énergiques et une production soignée, caractéristique du label Columbia. Bien qu’ils n’aient jamais atteint un grand succès commercial, Ballin' Jack a laissé une empreinte durable et a notamment été samplé par de nombreux artistes hip-hop.

Ballin' Jack emerged from Seattle’s vibrant late-'60s music scene, blending rock, jazz, and soul with a powerful brass section. Their 1970 self-titled debut album stands out with tight arrangements and infectious rhythms, drawing comparisons to bands like Chicago and Blood, Sweat & Tears. Despite limited mainstream recognition, Ballin' Jack’s innovative approach and strong musicianship earned them a cult following. Over the years, their music found new life through sampling, most notably in hip-hop.

The Ballin 'Jack formed a multiracial group in 1969 after following the rise to fame of their childhood friend, Jimi Hendrix. Although they never reached the same level of notoriety, their debut album has however attracted the respect of aficionados of rock, most of the songs being played in the first part of Jimi Hendrix they assured on the tour Cry of Love in 1969. their music is very varied: country, soul, rock, blues ... but it exudes a high power R & B whose sound is very characteristic of the late sixties.

D'excellents blues-rockers, voilà ce que sont ces floridiens de Tampa réunis sous l'étendard de (The) Blues Image. Au terme de l'écoute d'Open, leur deuxième LP (1970), tel est le constat que l'on se doit de faire. C'est solide dans tous ses contours, sans génie particulier mais sans couacs non plus. Il appartient au contingent des groupes qui font correctement le boulot et qui n'en rajoutent pas. Percutant, efficace, sans chercher à monopoliser les feux de la rampe, Blues Image a les faveurs de la critique de la fin des sixties et la reconnaissance des siens, notamment de Jimi Hendrix qui voit en lui un groupe d'avenir. Le chanteur-batteur Manuel Bertematti, proche de ce dernier, le percussionniste Joe Lala (du clan Manassas) et le guitariste Mike Pinera (futur Iron Butterfly) sont les instigateurs de ce projet débuté sous forme d'un trio fusionnant rock, jazz et rythmes cubains, structure que complète le bassiste gallois Malcolm Jones en 1966. Le registre est fort agréable.

The Byrds recordings didn't sell more and all his former colleagues are more successful than Roger McGuinn .. Gene Clark became, since the late 60s, a must-folk artist, although his records did not sell masses . David Crosby became a mega star with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, joined by Neil Young from Woodstock and an icon of the student and hippie rebellion, advocating free love and the use of soft drugs. When Chris Hillman, if his records were not better sold than Byrds of McGuinn, he was part of two groups among the most influential American rock scene: The Flying Burrito Bros. between 1969 and 1971 with Gram Parsons and Bernie Leadon, founder of Eagles and in 1972, was the band Manassas co-pilot of his friend Stephen Stills. This reformation is therefore more interests than other McGuinn. It shall have no sequel.

In 1973, the five original members of The Byrds — Roger McGuinn, David Crosby, Gene Clark, Chris Hillman, and Michael Clarke — reunited for a self-titled album, Byrds. While expectations were high for this comeback, the result was more subdued than fans hoped. Rather than recapturing the band’s pioneering jangle-rock energy, the album offered a reflective collection of folk, country, and rock-tinged solo-like contributions from each member. Critics were lukewarm, yet Byrds remains a significant chapter in the band's history, marking both a reunion and a farewell.

David Crosby est devenu une méga star avec Crosby, Stills & Nash, rejoints par Neil Young depuis Woodstock et une icône de la rébellion estudiantine et hippie, prônant l’amour libre et l’utilisation des drogues douces. Quand à Chris Hillman, si ses disques ne se sont pas mieux vendus que ceux des Byrds de McGuinn, il a fait partie de deux autres groupes parmi les plus influents de la scène rock américaine : The Flying Burrito Bros entre 1969 et 1971 avec Gram Parsons et Bernie Leadon, le fondateur des Eagles, puis dès 1972, fut le co-pilote du groupe Manassas de son ami Stephen Stills. Cette reformation sert donc plus les intérêts de McGuinn que les autres. Elle n'aura toutefois pas de suite.

En 1973, six ans après leur séparation, les cinq membres fondateurs des Byrds — Roger McGuinn, David Crosby, Gene Clark, Chris Hillman et Michael Clarke — se retrouvent pour un album de réunion sobrement intitulé Byrds. Bien que très attendu, cet unique disque de la formation originale fut accueilli de façon mitigée. Loin de la fougue des années 60, il témoigne plutôt d’une forme de maturité désabusée. L’album mêle folk-rock, country et quelques touches psychédéliques sur des compositions individuelles où chaque membre s’exprime sans véritable unité de ton. Un document important plus qu’un chef-d'œuvre, riche de ce qu’il raconte sur les trajectoires divergentes du groupe.
