Fanny - Fanny Hill (1972)

Fanny had already stepped into some big shoes by being the first all-female rock band signed to a major label, but with the release of 1972 s Fanny Hill, they took things to a new level, recording at The Beatles own Apple Studios with producer Richard Perry and famed Beatles engineer Geoff Emerick. And the result was Fanny s most varied and ambitious album, sporting a beautiful mix of ballads and rockers and a mature, socially conscious lyrical approach.

Gary Ogan & Bill Lamb - Portland (1972)

The year was 1971 and Elektra Records A&R man, producer, and artist, Marlin Greene, had flown to Portland to hear a promising new band. Marlin needed to sign an formation that brought along their own songs. Greg Branson, who was hosting Marlin’s visit to Portland, knew about two local kids fresh out of a highscool who actually did have their own songs. He quickly phoned Bill Lamb and Gary Ogan to ask if they were interested in auditioning for Eleckta Records. They sat and traded a few songs with Marlin, who was impressed enough to eventually sign them on to record their first album that he co-produced with Branson.

Emmett Finley - Emmett Finley (1971)

Despite a growing reputation, the eponymous and sole album of Emmet Finley remains one of the best kept secrets in pop music. The songs are strong pop/rock with complex, elaborate structures and unpredictable tempo changes, a kind of melting pot of pure sadness and anger. One of the reasons which can explain why it has been overlooked for so long (apart from its evident scarcity) is that it's not an easy album to get into.

Happy & Artie Traum - Double Back (1971)

The brothers Happy and Artie Traum were raised in the Bronx but ended up part of the Greenwich Village scene in the Sixties. Happy Traum became part of Dylan's team; he was in a group that released the first official version of "Blowin' in the Wind," and later would back Dylan up on his album Greatest Hits Vol II. Together, the Traum brothers blended their voices and instruments the way that only family can: this was the second of four albums they made together.

The Talbot Bros -The Talbot Bros (1974)

High-class country rock album from Mason Proffit graduates John and Terry Talbot. Less electric and kickin' than bands like the Outlaws, but more of a rootsy feel than the Eagles and all their imitators thanks to an acoustic emphasis and use of banjo, dobro, steel guitar, and harmonica. Hawaiian guitar leads grace the beautiful acoustic piece 'Trail of Tears'.

The Cates Gang - Wanted (1970)

The Cate Bros' historical debut album  in 1972.
The Cates Gang are the Cate Brothers before they became a sophisticated studio band. On this record you get the essence of the band in a way that you might in a small bar or nightclub. This is real, raw, hard-edged "stuff"; the type of material Sam and Dave did for Stax and Atlantic in the mid 1960's. These guys should have had a wider audience.
