Formé à Édimbourg en 1968, Bread, Love and Dreams est un groupe de folk psychédélique pastoral centré autour du poète, chanteur et guitariste David McNiven. Le nom du groupe fait référence au film néoréaliste italien Pane, Amore e Fantasia, reflétant bien l’univers bucolique, rêveur et imagé de leurs chansons. Influencé par la scène folk britannique des années 1960–70 (Pentangle, The Incredible String Band, Donovan), le groupe délivre une musique raffinée mêlant instruments acoustiques, harmonies vocales éthérées et thématiques lyriques. Leur second album, The Strange Tale of Captain Shannon and the Hunchback from Gigha (1970), est considéré comme leur chef-d’œuvre — un conte musical mêlant poésie, nature et mysticisme.

Formed in Edinburgh in 1968, Bread, Love and Dreams was a Scottish folk-psych group built around singer-songwriter David McNiven. Their name, inspired by the Italian neorealist film Pane, Amore e Fantasia, aptly reflects their delicate, lyrical, and pastoral sound world. Closely aligned with the British folk revival and psychedelic scenes (Pentangle, The Incredible String Band, Donovan), the band’s music is known for its soft harmonies, acoustic instrumentation, and poetic storytelling. Their second album, The Strange Tale of Captain Shannon and the Hunchback from Gigha (1970), stands as a hidden gem of the genre — an enchanting concept album exploring Celtic myth and existential themes.
