Charge est un supergroupe studio britannique formé de musiciens de session de tout premier plan, actifs dans les sphères soul, funk et jazz du Londres des années 70. Leur unique album, éponyme, sorti en 1974, témoigne d’un savoir-faire collectif exceptionnel. Ce projet réunit autour du chanteur Lee Vanderbilt quelques-uns des meilleurs instrumentistes de leur époque, souvent croisés aux côtés de Roxy Music, Kokomo, Joe Cocker ou Georgie Fame. Malgré une diffusion confidentielle à l’époque, Charge est aujourd’hui salué comme un classique méconnu du rare groove britannique, alliant grooves élégants, voix soulful et arrangements luxuriants.

Charge was a short-lived British studio project released in 1974, bringing together a dream team of elite session players from the UK’s soul, funk, and jazz scenes. Fronted by Caribbean-born vocalist Lee Vanderbilt, the band included luminaries such as Neil Hubbard, Alan Spenner, and Chris Mercer, all of whom had impressive resumes in top-tier acts like Kokomo, Roxy Music, and Joe Cocker. Their sole LP, Charge, blended refined soul, funk-infused grooves, and jazzy flourishes into a studio masterclass that went largely unnoticed upon release but has since gained cult status among rare groove and modern soul collectors.
