Formé à Sheffield en 1972, Ace est un groupe britannique de pub rock qui s’est rapidement distingué grâce à un son à la croisée du rock mélodique, de la soul et du rhythm and blues. Leur premier album, Five-A-Side, paru en 1974, est porté par le tube planétaire "How Long", écrit et interprété par le claviériste-chanteur Paul Carrack. Ce morceau au groove imparable propulse le groupe sur la scène internationale, notamment aux États-Unis. Le reste de l’album mêle élégamment guitares fluides, harmonies vocales et claviers feutrés, dans une ambiance à la fois chaleureuse et sophistiquée. Ace, formed in Sheffield in 1972, was one of the standout bands of the British pub rock movement. Their debut album Five-A-Side, released in 1974, gained major traction thanks to the hit single "How Long", penned and sung by keyboardist Paul Carrack. The song’s smooth blend of soul and rock helped the band break into the U.S. charts, giving them international visibility. The album as a whole presents a tight mix of laid-back grooves, melodic guitar lines, and Carrack’s warm vocals, delivering a sound that’s both refined and accessible. Though Ace disbanded a few years later, Five-A-Side remains a timeless introduction to 1970s British rock with soul influences.
