Né à Johannesburg en Afrique du Sud, John Kongos s’installe à Londres dans les années 60, où il évolue au sein des groupes Floribunda Rose puis Scrugg avant de se lancer en solo. En 1969, il signe Confusions About A Goldfish, un premier album ovni mêlant pop psychédélique, touches baroques, orchestrations pop et songwriting excentrique. On y décèle l'influence des Beatles période Sgt. Pepper, du Scott Walker des débuts ou encore d’un Bowie pré-Space Oddity. Cet album rare, inclassable et poétique, reste l’un des joyaux méconnus de la pop britannique de la fin des sixties.
