Savage Grace Group was formed in Detroit, Michigan, at the end of 1960 and immediately began to stand out among the many rock bands in town. Guitarist Ron Koss, keyboardist John Seanor and drummer Larry Zack played first in the format of a jazz trio called Scarlet Letter. After the arrival of singer / bassist Al Jacquez, the group was renamed Savage Grace. They quickly signed a contract with Reprise and released their first album in 1970. After moving to Los Angeles the following year, the band began writing a second album. In 1972, the band separated before reaching success, although their potential was high enough.
