Lee Michaels - Barrel (1970)

One of the masterpieces of the period, Barrel was essentially recorded live in the studio by Michaels (organ/bass) with Frosty on drums. It's a fabulous performance and one of the finest wamp/rock records of the period. The strengths of the album are the strengths of most of Michaels's early-1970s material: rich funk-rock-gospel vocals and keyboards.

L'un des chefs-d'œuvre de l'époque, Barrel a été essentiellement enregistré en direct dans le studio par Michaels (orgue / basse) avec Frosty à la batterie. C'est une performance fabuleuse et un des plus beaux enregistrements wamp/rock de cette période. Les points forts de l'album sont les points forts de la plupart des productions des années 1970 de Michaels: une voix funk-rock-gospel très riche et des claviers omni présents.

Freeport - Freeport (1970)

The album was released in december 1970, and the band hailed from Cleveland. That is a very good, very solid, and very consistent album. The sounds are oriented hard rock, featuring some vocal harmony and a great guitar work. Big fans of that genre are typically the only ones to know this album, but often consider it as disappointing. What a mistake ! It will attract most fans of harder rock, especially those that love the great early 70's spicy flavor.

L'album a été publié en décembre 1970, et le groupe est originaire de Cleveland. C'est un très bon,  très cohérent et très solide album. Les sons sont orientés hard rock, avec une certaine harmonie vocale et un grand travail de guitare. Les grands amateurs de ce genre sont généralement les seuls à connaître cet album, mais le considèrent souvent comme décevant. Quelle erreur! Il attirera la plupart des fans de rock plus difficile, en particulier ceux qui aiment la saveur épicée du grand début des années 70.

Frijid Pink is a Hard Rock band formed in Detroit in 1967 by five friends from school. This first work was recorded at Media Sound Studios in New York where the group stayed and partied with the likes of Janis Joplin, Rod Stewart and many others. The album Frijid Pink is issued in 1970, and even if they had never registered, Frijid Pink had obviously learned a lot over the past three years on the road.

Ce premier opus a été enregistré à Media Sound Studios à New York où le groupe est resté et fait la fête avec des gens comme Janis Joplin, Rod Stewart et bien d'autres. The Groundhogs - Split (1971)

The Groundhogs is a British blues-rock group born in the early sixties.  No more really blues, the group is geared more toward a vaguely psychedelic hard rock and especially offers a bursting disc riffs and inspired solos . McPhee reveals himself to be an exceptional guitarist who does wonders throughout it, well helped by a solid rhythm section. This album is the opportunity for the group to both display his virtuosity but also its scenic potential. Split is the kind of record that haunts you from the first listen!

The Groundhogs est un groupe britannique de blues-rock né au début des années soixante. Plus vraiment blues, le groupe s'oriente plus vers un hard rock vaguement psychédélique et offre surtout un disque gorgé de riffs et soli inspiré. McPhee s'y révèle être un guitariste d'exception qui fait des merveilles tout au long de celui-ci, bien aidé en cela par une section rythmique solide. Cet album est surtout l'occasion pour le groupe de faire à la fois étalage de sa virtuosité mais également de son potentiel scénique. Split est le genre de disque qui vous hante dès la première écoute !

Blodwyn Pig - Ahead Rings Out (1969)

Ahead Rings Out is a stellar concoction of gritty flamboyant blues-rock tunes and open-ended jazz centered around Mick Abrahams' cool-handed guitar playing, but it's the nonstop infusion of the other styles that makes the album such a solid listen. After only one album with Jethro Tull, Abrahams left to form this band, and it's evident that he had a lot of pent-up energy inside him when he recorded each of the album's tracks.

Ahead Rings Out est une concoction stellaire flamboyante d'airs de blues-rock graveleux et de jazz rock centrée essentiellement autour du jeu de guitare de Mick Abrahams, mais c'est la distillation constante de styles différents qui donne à l'album son principal intérêt. Après seulement un album avec Jethro Tull, Abrahams est parti pour former ce groupe, et il est évident qu'il y avait d'énergie accumulée à l'intérieur de lui quand il a enregistré chacun des morceaux de l'album.

Wet Willie - Wet Willie (1971)

This first album has an atrocious title and an ugly album cover, but Wet Willie's eponymous debut is a good slice of Southern rock. The band occasionally stretches out a bit, getting into bluesy improvised sections, but their main talent is for laidback Southern grooves. The album is a little uneven, but 'Shame, Shame, Shame', 'Dirty Leg' and 'Have a Good Time' illustrate perfectly their potential.

Ce premier opus a un titre atroce et une couverture vraiment horrible, mais ce premier album éponyme de Wet Willie est une bonne tranche de rock sudiste. Le groupe s'étend parfois un peu, entre dans des sections improvisées très bluesy, mais leur talent principal réside dans les ballades groovy du Sud profond. L'album est un peu inégal, mais 'Shame, Shame, Shame', 'Dirty Leg' et 'Have A Good Time' illustrent parfaitement leur potentiel.
