Wishbone Ash - Argus (1972)

Through a Blues Rock sound and Jazzy influences, the English quartet hypnotizes and bewitched by its famous guitar duels that make it famous. The incessant and vibrant dialogues of the instruments, often immersed in a crescendo construction, succeed one another with pain, carried by the voice of the bassist and leader Martin Turner.

Worked and obsessive solos alternate the compositions, marking a transition between ballads and purely Rock passages. "Sometimes World" and "Time Was" perfectly illustrate this construction popular in the 70s, including Lynyrd Skynyrd who will perform with "Free Bird" in the same period. Based on catchy and throbbing intros, converging with intensity, the pace accelerates to lead to a pair of breathtaking guitars.

A travers un son Blues Rock et des influences Jazzy, le quatuor anglais hypnotise et ensorcelle par ses fameux duels de guitares qui en font sa notoriété. Les dialogues incessants et vibrants des instruments, souvent immiscés dans une construction en crescendo, se succèdent avec douleur, porté par la voix posée du bassiste et leader Martin Turner.

Des solos travaillés et obsédants alternent les compositions, marquant une transition entre ballades et passages purement Rock. "Sometimes World" et "Time Was" illustrent parfaitement cette construction très prisée dans les années 70, comme notamment Lynyrd Skynyrd qui s’y adonnera avec "Free Bird" dans la même période. Basée sur des intros accrocheuses et lancinantes, convergeant avec intensité, le rythme s’accélère pour aboutir à un duo de guitares à couper le souffle.

Eloy - Ocean (1977)

Ocean is for many the most accomplished work of Eloy, so that the training will try years later a continuation to bounce back on the success of yesteryear. The album is divided into four long sequels unlike the previous split shorter titles. Nevertheless, the musical unity of the ensemble is remarkable."Poseidon's Creation", the first title, is simply extraordinary. From the introduction the battery unfolds bringing a slow rise in power playing on the rhythm and amplitude of the sound carried by tablecloths to arrive on the central riff quite unstoppable: a whole structure making the piece a masterpiece . Bornemann shines with his playing and his ability to create melodies enveloping our ears in an ocean of musical delight. The title is like a wave that would carry us in its flow that is impossible to resist and we feel a real lightness allowed by the thrust of Archimedes as the 11 minutes are perfectly harmonious; the internal consistency of the title, without abrupt break, is therefore to be emphasized. In addition, the aquatic and mythical world of Atlantis is transcribed by the music in arpeggios, the sounds of keyboards, the effects of the voice of Bornemann. In short, a centerpiece for Eloy.

Ocean est pour beaucoup l’œuvre la plus aboutie d’ Eloy, si bien que la formation tentera des années plus tard une suite pour rebondir sur le succès d’antan. L’album se découpe en quatre longues suites contrairement aux précédents scindés titres plus courts. Il n’empêche que l’unité musicale de l’ensemble est remarquable. 

"Poseidon’s Creation", le premier titre, est tout bonnement extraordinaire. Dès l’introduction la batterie se déploie amenant une lente montée en puissance jouant sur le rythme et l’amplitude du son portée par des nappes pour arriver sur le riff central assez imparable : toute une structure faisant de la pièce un chef-d’œuvre. Bornemann brille par son jeu et par sa capacité à créer des mélodies enveloppant nos oreilles dans un océan de volupté musicale. Le titre est comme une vague qui nous emporterait dans son flot auquel il est impossible de résister et on ressent une véritable légèreté permise par la poussée d’Archimède tant les 11 minutes sont parfaitement harmonieuses ; la cohérence interne au titre, sans rupture abrupte, est donc à souligner. De plus, l’univers aquatique et mythique de l’Atlantide est retranscrit par la musique dans les arpèges, les sons des claviers, les effets de la voix de Bornemann. Bref, une pièce maîtresse pour Eloy.

Duane Allman & Eric Clapton - Studio Jams (1970)

Tom Dowd is responsible for introducing Duane Allman and Eric Clapton. In 1970, Dowd was in the middle of recording the Allman Brother’s second album, Idlewild South , when Eric’s manager (Robert Stigwood) called to tell Tom that Eric would like to bring his new band, Derek and the Dominos, to Criteria Studios in Miami, Florida to record with him.

Eric and the rest of the Dominos Allman & Eric Clapton arrived at Criteria Studios in late August. During the first week, most of the studio time was spent jamming and piecing together new songs.

Southern Rock meets English Blues...

Tom Dowd est responsable de la rencontre de Duane Allman et Eric Clapton. En 1970, Dowd était en train d'enregistrer le deuxième album des Allman Brother, Idlewild South, lorsque le manager d'Eric (Robert Stigwood) a appelé pour dire à Eric qu'Eric aimerait amener son nouveau groupe, Derek and the Dominos, aux studios Criteria de Miami, Floride pour enregistrer avec lui.

Eric et le reste des Dominos sont arrivés aux Criteria Studios à la fin du mois d'août. Au cours de la première semaine, la majeure partie du temps passé en studio a été consacrée à la compilation et à la composition de nouvelles chansons.

David Crosby - Sky Trails (2017)

The proposed music is quite disconcerting for who remembers Crosby with his acoustic guitar and harmonies. Our man who has always loved jazz, from Dave Brubeck to John Coltrane through Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan or Miles Davis, and gets loose on this album with complex arrangements and melodies. A blind listening to "She's Got To Be Somewhere" for example reminds of Steely Dan. So we can compare this album to those of Joni Mitchell when in the seventies she played on his album Hejira with Jaco Pastorius, Wayne Shooter and Larry Carlton. The reference to Joni is not anodyne, because Crosby takes "Amelia" from the aforementioned album. Also the arrangements of "Before Tomorrow Falls on Love" and "Here It's Almost Sunset" with a breathtaking work by the Estonian bassist Mai Agan are in the same vein. Crosby remains obsessed with Joni Mitchell since he produced his first album Song to a Seagull in 1967!

La musique proposée est assez déconcertante pour qui se souvient de Crosby avec sa guitare acoustique et ses harmonies. Notre homme qui a toujours aimé le jazz, de Dave Brubeck à John Coltrane en passant par Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan ou Miles Davis, et se lâche sur cet album avec des arrangements et des mélodies complexes. Une écoute en aveugle de « She's Got To Be Somewhere” par exemple fait penser à Steely Dan. Aussi on peut rapprocher cet album de ceux de Joni Mitchell quand dans les années soixante-dix elle jouait sur son album Hejira avec Jaco Pastorius, Wayne Shooter et Larry Carlton. La référence à Joni n’est pas anodine, car Crosby reprend « Amelia » tiré de l’album précité.
