Co-fondateur des Byrds, Gene Clark est l’un des grands auteurs-compositeurs oubliés de l’Amérique des années 60 et 70. Poète introspectif, mélodiste hors pair, il quitte les Byrds dès 1966, préférant les chemins solitaires à la gloire collective. Après quelques albums inégaux mais inspirés, il livre en 1974 No Other, œuvre ambitieuse, baroque, mystique – et incomprise à sa sortie.

Produit par Thomas Jefferson Kaye pour Asylum Records, l’album mêle country rock, soul, psychédélisme, harmonies vocales célestes et production luxuriante. Trop cher, trop étrange, trop en avance sur son temps, No Other est un échec commercial retentissant. Mais au fil des années, il devient un véritable album culte, considéré aujourd’hui comme un sommet du folk rock cosmique américain, aux côtés de Harvest, Astral Weeks ou Blue. Un disque visionnaire et bouleversant.

As a founding member of The Byrds, Gene Clark was one of the most gifted—and underrated—songwriters of his era. After leaving the band in 1966, he embarked on a solo career defined by lyrical depth, melodic brilliance, and emotional vulnerability. In 1974, he released No Other, his magnum opus—lavish, spiritual, ambitious, and largely ignored at the time.

Produced by Thomas Jefferson Kaye for Asylum Records, the album fused country rock, gospel harmonies, psychedelia, and ornate arrangements into something uniquely transcendent. Too costly and unconventional for the label, No Otherfailed commercially but was rediscovered decades later, now hailed as one of the great lost albums of the 1970s—cosmic American music at its most sublime.
