Leur œuvre phare, The Survival of St. Joan, est souvent considérée comme la première "rock opera" américaine jamais enregistrée. Ce double album conceptuel puise son inspiration dans l’histoire revisitée de Jeanne d’Arc, basée sur une pièce de théâtre du même nom signée James Lineberger.

Formed in the late 1960s in New York, Smoke Rise was an unconventional progressive rock band best known for The Survival of St. Joan, considered to be the first American rock opera ever recorded. The ambitious double LP is based on a play of the same name by James Lineberger and offers a reimagined tale of Joan of Arc’s fate.

The album unfolds with dramatic storytelling, lush arrangements, and a mix of psychedelic rock and classical influences. Male and female vocals alternate in this haunting narrative filled with themes of war, faith, and betrayal.
