The Great Society est un groupe psychédélique formé à San Francisco en 1965, rendu célèbre par la présence de Grace Slick, future voix emblématique de Jefferson Airplane. Le groupe ne publia aucun album de son vivant, mais cette captation live au Matrix Club en 1966 fut éditée à titre posthume en 1968. Conspicuous Only in Its Absence est un précieux témoignage brut de la scène psyché de la côte Ouest, portée par la voix déjà envoûtante de Slick, qui y interprète notamment une première version de Somebody to Love (alors intitulée Someone to Love), ainsi que White Rabbit, deux futurs hymnes psychédéliques. Le disque baigne dans une ambiance improvisée, avec des morceaux longs, souvent hypnotiques, entre raga-rock, garage fuzzé et proto-acid rock.

The Great Society was a short-lived San Francisco psychedelic band formed in 1965, best known for featuring Grace Slick before she joined Jefferson Airplane. The group never released a studio album during its existence, but this live recording from 1966 at the Matrix was posthumously released in 1968. Conspicuous Only in Its Absence is a raw and vital document of the early West Coast psych scene. Featuring early versions of Somebody to Love (then titled Someone to Love) and White Rabbit, the album captures the hypnotic and improvisational energy of the band, blending raga-rock, fuzzed-out garage, and proto-acid rock with Grace Slick's mesmerizing vocals.
