Après la dissolution initiale de The Electric Flag en 1968, le groupe ressuscite brièvement en 1974 avec un nouvel album, The Band Kept Playing. Si le line-up original n’est que partiellement réuni (Mike Bloomfield n’y participe pas), Buddy Miles et Barry Goldberg sont à la manœuvre pour ce retour marqué par une orientation plus soul-funk et rhythm’n’blues que leur précédent opus. L’ambition d’un « American Music Band » est toujours présente, mais le feu des débuts s’est quelque peu estompé. L’album contient néanmoins quelques moments forts, notamment grâce à la voix toujours puissante de Buddy Miles et à des cuivres efficaces. Un disque intéressant, bien que moins marquant que A Long Time Comin'.

Following their original split in 1968, The Electric Flag briefly reformed in 1974 to release The Band Kept Playing. While the lineup lacks guitarist Mike Bloomfield, core members like Buddy Miles and Barry Goldberg return to guide the project. This second album leans more into smooth soul, funk, and R&B territory, moving away from the blues-rock-psych fusion of their debut. Though less fiery and cohesive, the album offers strong vocal performances by Miles and tight horn arrangements. It's a worthwhile listen for fans of 1970s soul-infused rock, even if it doesn’t recapture the raw edge of their first effort.
