It is commonly accepted that this monument is the last great work of the Beach Boys, and it's right! More balanced than Smiley Smile (which has a few hits like "Good Vibrations" and "Heroes And Villains'), asked more than Wild Honey (where Mike Love actually tons to revive the group) or indigestible Sunflower, this album shows a writing quality and variety in the songs than any other late Beach Boys album has. The album was released in 1971, four years after the implosion of Brian Wilson. Now stripped of surfing identity and avant-garde image, the group has also overtaken by the Woodstock generation. After 10 years of career, the group is now part of the establishment, a certain aristocracy of American rock that no longer recipe for youth. As if all had realized the urgent need to restart the machine, each member contributes to writing and composition and, incredibly, mayonnaise takes. It's a combination of good pieces from various members of the group who made this remarkable Surf's Up album.

Plus équilibré que Smiley Smile (qui possède quelques tubes comme 'Good Vibrations' et 'Heroes And Villains'), plus posé que Wild Honey (où Mike Love en fait des tonnes pour relancer le groupe) ou encore l’indigeste Sunflower, cet album montre une qualité d’écriture et une variété dans les chansons qu’aucun autre album tardif des Beach Boys ne possède. L’album est sorti en 1971, soit quatre années après l’implosion de Brian Wilson. Désormais débarrassé de son identité surf et de son image avant-gardiste, le groupe s’est en outre fait dépasser par la génération Woodstock. Après 10 ans de carrière, le groupe fait désormais partie de l’establishment, d’une certaine aristocratie du rock américain qui ne fait plus recette auprès des jeunes. Comme si tous s’étaient rendus compte du besoin urgent de relancer la machine, chacun des membres contribue à l’écriture et à la composition et, incroyablement, la mayonnaise prend. C’est une conjonction de bons morceaux provenant de divers membres du groupe qui fait de ce Surf’s Up un album remarquable.
