The Move - Looking On (1970)

This recording is something monstrous. It is an inexorable lava flow where the hard rock and prog begin to melt to form a proto-glam magma in which the white-hot guitars alongside oboe, cello and saxophone furious. It is the work grandiose and exhausting of a group that has decided not to compromise and stubbornly continuing on to madness and self-destruction. Shazam after the commercial failure that has stymied the rise of The Move, the band recorded the arrival of Jeff Lynne and Looking On not appear as expected burst of lucidity, but as a radicalization both great and suicidal. The album is divided between explosions rock n 'roll and epic pieces. The first, which will later Wood a specialty with Wizzard, are an opportunity for the group to issue a dense and aggressive racket, at ground level, which sets the stage for all future glameux including snobs of Roxy Music and edgy sax. A 'Turkish Tram Conductor Blues' or 'When Alice Comes Back to the Farm' are all mines ready to explode and carefully placed on the disk for something different. For beyond these moments of maximum emotional release, Looking is especially true for the amazing compositions that see the two co-leaders with aplomb add a strong progressive flavor to their music.

C’est une coulée de lave inexorable où le hard rock et le prog entrent en fusion pour former un magma proto-glam dans lequel les guitares chauffées à blanc côtoient hautbois, violoncelles et saxophones furieux. C’est l’œuvre grandiose et épuisante d’un groupe qui a décidé de ne faire aucun compromis et de poursuivre obstinément sa route vers la folie et l’autodestruction. Après l’échec commercial de Shazam, qui a stoppé net l’ascension de The Move, le groupe enregistre l'arrivée de Jeff Lynne et Looking On apparaît non pas comme le sursaut de lucidité attendu, mais comme une radicalisation à la fois géniale et suicidaire.  L’album se partage entre déflagrations rock n’ roll et pièces épiques. Les premières, dont Wood se fera plus tard une spécialité avec Wizzard, sont l’occasion pour le groupe de délivrer un boucan dense et agressif, au ras du sol, qui prépare le terrain pour tous les glameux à venir, y compris les snobinards de Roxy Music et leur saxo énervé. Un 'Turkish Tram Conductor Blues' ou un 'When Alice Comes Back to the Farm' sont autant de mines prêtes à exploser et judicieusement placées sur le disque pour varier les plaisirs. Car au-delà de ces moments de défoulement maximal, Looking On vaut surtout pour les incroyables compositions qui voient les deux co-leaders ajouter avec aplomb un fort arôme progressif à leur musique.
