The Dirtbombs - Ooey Gooey Chewy Ka-blooey! (2013)

The Dirtbombs promised to release a pop album Bubblegum. It's done ! One would expect a group album of covers such as 1910 Fruitgum Company or Archies, but the singer Mike Collins wrote 10 new songs that pay homage to the style popularized in the late 60, early 70. Dirtbombs is sweeter, more pop rock than the previous, with tunes from Josie & the Pussycats or to the Banana Splits with childish themes and choruses at all costs. But the similarity ends there and the many guest musicians (unheard on an album of Dirtbombs). While the bubble gum music consisted of a prod in a hurry with studio musicians in single file and lyricists engaged for the occasion, Ooey Gooey Chewy Ka-blooey is the result of an album built, worked and reworked for almost two years.

On aurait pu s’attendre à un album de reprises de groupes tels que 1910 Fruitgum Company ou des Archies, mais le chanteur Mike Collins a écrit 10 nouvelles chansons qui rendent hommage au style popularisé à la fin des années 60, début 70. Ce Dirtbombs est plus sucré, plus pop rock que les précédents, avec des airs de Josie & the Pussycats ou encore de the Banana Splits avec thèmes enfantins et choeurs à tout va. Mais la ressemblance s’arrête là et à la multiplicité des musiciens invités (du jamais vu sur un album de Dirtbombs). Alors que la musique bubble gum consistait en une prod à la va vite avec des musiciens studios en file indienne et des paroliers engagés pour l’occasion, Ooey Gooey Chewy Ka-Blooey est le fruit d’un album construit, travaillé et retravaillé pendant presque deux ans.
