Not only this second album of Neil Young marks an artistic mutation (almost) total compared to the first, but also in relation to the parallel career he has with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, recalling the most violent moments of his work with Buffalo Springfield. Aside from the delicate 'Round & Round' and the country 'The Losing End' and 'Running Dry', the rest is a saturated guitar fireworks and tortured he alone has the secret and built for rock scenes. It is accompanied by a rhythm trio re-named Crazy Horse (the name of the Oglala Sioux chief) it will use here and there throughout his solo career, and his singing suddenly matured. The quintet makes justice and three more flamboyant Neil Young songs, flowing and powerful, different from the other (Neil Young, despite songs Therefore directory, has rarely repeated), complex melodies and exciting fields: 'Cinnamon Girl' (sang with falsetto with rhythm guitarist Danny Whitten), 'Down by the River' and the beautiful 'Cowgirl in the Sand' which closes the album.

Non seulement ce deuxième album de Neil Young marque une mutation artistique (presque) totale en comparaison de son premier, mais aussi par rapport à la carrière parallèle qu’il entretient avec Crosby, Stills & Nash, rappelant les moments les plus violents de son travail avec Buffalo Springfield.

Mis à part le délicat 'Round & Round' et les country 'The Losing End' et 'Running Dry', le reste est un feu d’artifice de guitare saturée et torturée dont il a seul le secret et taillé pour les scènes rock. Il y est accompagné par un trio rythmique re-baptisé Crazy Horse (du nom du chef Sioux Oglala) qu’il utilisera ici et là tout au long de sa carrière solo, et son chant a mûri soudainement. Le quintette rend ainsi justice à trois des plus flamboyantes chansons de Neil Young, coulantes et puissantes, différentes l’une de l’autre (Neil Young, malgré un répertoire de chansons conséquent, s’est rarement répété), aux mélodies complexes et aux trames passionnantes : 'Cinnamon Girl' (chanté avec voix de fausset avec le guitariste rythmique Danny Whitten), 'Down By The River' et le superbe 'Cowgirl In The Sand' qui clôt l’album.
