Sorti en 1971 sur le label Deram, Stud est le premier album du groupe formé par d’anciens membres de Taste (John Wilson et Richard McCracken) et de Family (Jim Cregan et John Weider). Loin du blues-rock brut de leurs formations précédentes, Stud propose un mélange ambitieux de rock progressif, de jazz-rock et de folk, avec des passages instrumentaux sophistiqués et de longues improvisations. L’album, bien que salué pour sa virtuosité, n’a pas rencontré de grand succès commercial, mais reste apprécié des amateurs de rock expérimental et technique du début des années 70.

Released in 1971 on the Deram label, Stud is the debut album by a band formed by former members of Taste (John Wilson and Richard McCracken) and Family (Jim Cregan and John Weider). Moving away from the raw blues-rock of their previous outfits, Stud embraced an ambitious blend of progressive rock, jazz-rock, and folk, with sophisticated instrumental passages and extended improvisations. Though critically appreciated for its musicianship, the album failed to achieve commercial success but remains a cult favorite among fans of early ‘70s experimental rock.
