Formé à Hamm, en Allemagne de l’Ouest, Abacus est l’un des groupes pionniers du krautrock mélodique. Contrairement à leurs contemporains plus expérimentaux (Can, Faust, Amon Düül II), Abacus privilégie une approche plus accessible et mélodique, mêlant influences prog britanniques, pop psychédélique et touches classiques.

Leur premier album, Abacus, voit le jour en 1971 sur le label Polydor. Il s’impose comme une œuvre ambitieuse où les structures progressives rencontrent des harmonies vocales soignées, des claviers atmosphériques et des guitares tantôt planantes, tantôt incisives. L’album évoque Procol Harum, Barclay James Harvest ou même The Moody Blues, tout en gardant une identité bien allemande. Un classique oublié du rock symphonique allemand.

Hailing from Hamm, West Germany, Abacus was one of the early pioneers of melodic krautrock. While many of their contemporaries leaned toward experimentation, Abacus took a more structured and accessible path, drawing inspiration from British prog, psychedelic pop, and classical music.

Their self-titled debut album, released in 1971 on Polydor, is a lush, symphonic rock journey filled with harmonized vocals, atmospheric keyboards, and both soaring and biting guitar work. Fans of bands like Procol Harum, Barclay James Harvest, and The Moody Blues will find familiar echoes here—yet with a distinct German flavor. A hidden gem of early 70s progressive rock.
