Avec Gas Food Lodging, Green On Red s'impose comme un pilier de l’alternative country rock des années 1980. Originaires de Tucson, Arizona, puis installés à Los Angeles, les membres du groupe explorent ici une veine plus roots et americana, loin de leurs débuts plus psyché-garage. Emmenés par Dan Stuart (chant) et Chuck Prophet (guitare), ils mêlent désenchantement, humour noir et influences Dylaniennes dans une production brute mais habitée. Un album phare du mouvement "paisley underground", qui réconcilie rock indépendant et héritage country.

Dès le premier titre, le faux hymne 'That's What Dreams Are For', on sent que le son des Green On Red s'est considérablement affiné tout en conservant cet aspect déglingué, looser qui fait toute sa force. 'Black River', harmonica et country-rock oblige, rapproche encore plus Green On Red de The Band cité plus haut. Mais une verve plus rock'n'roll rejaillit tout de suite après avec le très hargneux 'Hair Of The Dog'. Contre-balancé par la pop-song qui suit, 'This Is Know' sublimée par les claviers de Chris Cacabas. Dan Stuart chante et glorifie une Amérique à la Kerouac peuplée de paumés tous plus pathétiques les uns que les autres. Green On Red évolue faut-il le rappeler à l'époque reaganienne. Une époque ô combien pourrie et violente.  Abandonnant totalement ses véillités primaires de psychédélisme, Green On Red réussit avec Gas Food Lodging un album ô combien important du rock indé des années 80. Car bien que passé inaperçu à l'époque, Gas Food Lodging est devenu par la suite une source continue d'inspiration pour Wilco, Giant Sand et toute la scène alternative-country.

With Gas Food Lodging, Green On Red carved a significant niche in 1980s alt-country rock. Originally from Tucson and based in L.A., the band embraced a rawer, more Americana-tinged sound, stepping away from their earlier psych-garage style. Frontman Dan Stuart and guitarist Chuck Prophet delivered gritty storytelling, Dylan-esque lyrical flair, and unpolished yet compelling arrangements. A key album of the "paisley underground" scene, it helped define the alt-country aesthetic for a new generation.

From the first track, the fake anthem 'That's What Dreams Are For', we feel that the sound of Green On Red considerably refined while maintaining the dilapidated appearance, looser makes all his strength. 'Black River', harmonica and country-rock forces, even closer to Green On Red The Band cited above. But a more rock'n'roll verve sprinkled immediately after the very aggressive 'Hair Of The Dog'.
