Ray Materick est né à Brantford, Ontario, dans les années 1950, et a grandi dans un environnement influencé par la foi chrétienne et la musique country-gospel. C’est son père, pasteur et musicien amateur, qui l’initie à la musique dès son plus jeune âge. Ray découvre les grands songwriters nord-américains comme Bob Dylan et Leonard Cohen dans les années 60, ce qui l'inspire à écrire des chansons narratives et intimistes. Après quelques années dans les clubs folk de Toronto, il signe avec Kanata Records avant de connaître un succès grandissant avec Warner/Reprise. Sa carrière est marquée par un style folk-rock introspectif, ponctué de moments de douceur pop et de poésie émotive.

Born in Brantford, Ontario, in the 1950s, Ray Materick grew up in a family shaped by Christian faith and country-gospel music. His father, a Baptist pastor and amateur musician, introduced him to music early on. In the 1960s, Ray discovered North American songwriters like Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and Joni Mitchell, which inspired his narrative, intimate songwriting. Starting his career in Toronto’s folk clubs, he signed with Kanata Records, later finding success with Warner/Reprise, where he gained prominence in the Canadian music scene with his introspective folk-rock sound.
