Hunger est un groupe américain de rock psychédélique originaire de Portland, Oregon, actif principalement entre 1967 et 1970. Émergeant à l'apogée de la scène psyché de la West Coast, leur musique incarne les courants les plus expérimentaux et introspectifs de l’époque, entre spiritualité acide, guitares fuzz et orgue omniprésent.

Initialement connu sous le nom de The Outcasts, le groupe adopte le nom Hunger en 1967, dans une volonté de refléter un son plus intense et des thématiques existentielles, en phase avec les mouvements culturels de la jeunesse américaine en mutation. Installés à Los Angeles, ils s’intègrent rapidement à la scène psyché californienne, aux côtés de formations comme Iron Butterfly, Vanilla Fudge ou The Doors.

Le groupe se compose principalement de :

Steve Hansen : orgue, claviers (véritable moteur sonore du groupe),
John Morton : guitare,
Tom Tanory : basse,
Bill Daffern (alias Dave Anderrson) : batterie, chant,
Mike Parkinson : chant, guitare rythmique.

En 1969, Hunger publie son unique album, Strictly From Hunger, sur le petit label Public! Records basé à Los Angeles. Produit par Ed Cobb (connu pour ses travaux avec The Standells et The Chocolate Watchband), cet album est un condensé de rock psyché heavy : orgue envoûtant, guitares saturées, effets stéréo, atmosphères troubles et textes planants. Il s’impose rapidement comme une œuvre culte dans l’underground psychédélique, notamment grâce à des titres comme Portland 69, Trying to Make the Best, Workshop ou She Let Him Continue.

Deux versions de l’album circulent :

La version originale, aujourd’hui rarissime, avec des prises brutes,
Une réédition retravaillée (remix ou overdubs), parue dans les années 1970, source de confusion chez les collectionneurs.

Dans les années 1990-2000, l’album connaît une renaissance critique, grâce à des rééditions sur des labels spécialisés comme Sundazed ou Akarma, qui contribuent à restaurer son statut de classique psyché oublié. Le vinyle original est aujourd’hui hautement recherché par les amateurs de rock underground.

Côté parcours, Bill Daffern rejoindra brièvement Captain Beyond puis Player dans les années 70. Les autres membres continueront à évoluer dans la scène musicale locale sans atteindre une reconnaissance nationale.

Hunger was an American psychedelic rock band from Portland, Oregon, active mainly between 1967 and 1970. Emerging during the golden age of the West Coast psych scene, the band embraced a darker, heavier sound featuring fuzzy guitars, swirling organs, and introspective, existential themes.

Originally known as The Outcasts, the band renamed itself Hunger in 1967 to reflect a deeper artistic vision. After relocating to Los Angeles, they became part of the expanding California psych rock movement, often compared to Iron Butterfly, Vanilla Fudge, and The Doors.

The core lineup included:

Steve Hansen – organ, keyboards (the sonic backbone of the group),
John Morton – guitar,
Tom Tanory – bass,
Bill Daffern (aka Dave Anderrson) – drums, vocals,
Mike Parkinson – vocals, rhythm guitar.

In 1969, Hunger released their sole album, Strictly From Hunger, on the obscure Public! Records label in L.A. Produced by Ed Cobb (known for his work with The Standells and The Chocolate Watchband), the album is a heavy psych relicfilled with swirling organ, fuzz-drenched guitars, stereo effects, and trippy lyrics. It stands out as a raw and immersive example of late-60s acid rock. Key tracks include Portland 69, Trying to Make the Best, Workshop, and She Let Him Continue.

There are two distinct versions of the album:

A rare original pressing with alternate takes,
A later reissue, sometimes remixed or partially re-recorded, which has caused confusion among collectors.

Rediscovered in the 1990s and 2000s, Strictly From Hunger has been reissued by psych specialist labels such as Sundazed and Akarma, and is now considered an underground classic in psychedelic rock circles. The original vinyl remains a highly sought-after collectible.

Drummer/vocalist Bill Daffern went on to briefly join Captain Beyond and Player. Other members continued working in music, mostly within the Los Angeles and Portland scenes.
