Formé à Londres au début des années 70, Starry Eyed and Laughing est un groupe britannique de folk-rock électrique, fortement influencé par les Byrds, mais capable d’imposer une identité propre. Le groupe est structuré autour de deux membres fondateurs : Tony Poole (chant, guitare 12 cordes) et Ross McGeeney (chant, guitare). Ils sont ensuite rejoints par Steve Hall à la basse et Nick Brown, remplacé plus tard par Michael Wackford, à la batterie.

Leur nom est emprunté à une phrase du morceau Chimes of Freedom de Bob Dylan, popularisé par les Byrds — une référence évidente à leur principale influence musicale. Musicalement, ils combinent des harmonies vocales soignées avec des guitares jangle et un son lumineux, à la croisée du folk-rock américain, de la pop psychédélique anglaise, et du rock mélodique des années 70. Leur musique évoque les Byrds, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, avec une touche proprement britannique, mélancolique et raffinée.

Après s’être fait connaître sur la scène londonienne, leur premier album sort en 1974 sur le label CBS Records, suivi de Thought Talk en 1975, plus ambitieux et introspectif. Malgré d'excellentes critiques et plusieurs tournées (notamment avec Be-Bop Deluxe, Help Yourself, Man ou encore Stackridge), le groupe ne parvient pas à percer commercialement et se sépare en 1976.

Dans les années 2000, leur œuvre est réhabilitée grâce à plusieurs rééditions, et leur statut culte est désormais bien établi parmi les amateurs de jangle rock et de folk-rock sophistiqué. Tony Poole est resté actif musicalement, continuant à faire vivre l’esprit du groupe.

Formed in early 1970s London, Starry Eyed and Laughing was a British folk-rock band with an electric, melodic sound, heavily inspired by the Byrds but clearly able to carve out its own personality. The band was built around founders Tony Poole (vocals, 12-string guitar) and Ross McGeeney (vocals, guitar), later joined by Steve Hall on bass and Nick Brown(replaced by Michael Wackford) on drums.

Their name is taken from a line in Bob Dylan’s Chimes of Freedom, famously covered by the Byrds — a direct nod to one of their key influences. Musically, they blended lush vocal harmonies, chiming guitars, and a bright, jangly sound rooted in American folk-rock, British psychedelic pop, and 70s melodic rock. Their music recalls The Byrds, CSNY, yet adds a distinctly British, wistful edge.

After making their mark on the London club circuit, they released their debut album in 1974 on CBS Records, followed by Thought Talk in 1975 — more mature and exploratory. Despite strong reviews and multiple tours (with Be-Bop Deluxe, Help Yourself, Man, Stackridge), they failed to find commercial success and disbanded in 1976.

Rediscovered in the 2000s through several reissues, they’ve since achieved cult status among fans of jangle rock and intelligent folk-pop. Tony Poole has remained active in music, keeping the band’s legacy alive.
