Mark Fry est né en 1952 en Angleterre dans une famille d’artistes. Fils du peintre Anthony Fry et descendant de Roger Fry (critique d’art influent du Bloomsbury Group), il grandit dans un univers empreint de culture, de peinture et de musique. Très jeune, il développe un goût prononcé pour la folk britannique et les sonorités psychédéliques naissantes.
En 1971, à 18 ans, il part étudier la peinture à l’Accademia delle Belle Arti de Florence. C’est là qu’il rencontre le label italien IT Dischi qui lui propose d’enregistrer ses chansons. L’album Dreaming With Alice est enregistré durant l’été 1971 aux studios RCA Italiana de Rome, avec des musiciens de session italiens (dont Carlo Metaxas) et le producteur Vincenzo Micocci.
Sorti en 1972 exclusivement en Italie, l’album passe inaperçu. Mark Fry retourne en Angleterre et abandonne la musique pour se consacrer à la peinture. Pourtant, Dreaming With Alice va connaître une seconde vie inattendue. Redécouvert dans les années 1990-2000 par les passionnés de folk psychédélique, l’album devient culte et est salué comme un chef-d’œuvre méconnu.
Sa musique évoque un univers pastoral et rêveur, aux confins de Lewis Carroll et de Nick Drake, entre folk acoustique en fingerpicking, flûtes brumeuses et effets hallucinés. On y trouve des structures circulaires, une voix fragile, une atmosphère intimiste et poétique — presque irréelle.
Mark Fry, devenu peintre reconnu, vit aujourd’hui dans le Dorset. Touché par la redécouverte de son album, il revient ponctuellement à la musique avec des disques subtils et introspectifs : Shooting the Moon (2008) et I Lived in Trees(2011), ce dernier réalisé avec The A. Lords, dans une veine ambient folk.

Mark Fry was born in 1952 in England, into a family of artists. The son of painter Anthony Fry and a descendant of Bloomsbury Group figure and art critic Roger Fry, he was raised in an environment steeped in culture, art, and music. From an early age, he was drawn to British folk and emerging psychedelic sounds.
In 1971, at age 18, he moved to Florence to study painting at the Accademia delle Belle Arti. There, he met the small Italian label IT Dischi, which invited him to record his songs. The album Dreaming With Alice was recorded in the summer of 1971 at RCA Italiana studios in Rome, with Italian session musicians (including Carlo Metaxas) and producer Vincenzo Micocci.
Released only in Italy in 1972, the album went unnoticed. Fry returned to England and left music behind to focus on painting. However, Dreaming With Alice later enjoyed an unexpected revival. Rediscovered in the 1990s–2000s by psychedelic folk collectors, it gained cult status and was praised as an overlooked masterpiece.
His music evokes a pastoral, dreamlike world—somewhere between Lewis Carroll and Nick Drake—with acoustic fingerpicking, hazy flutes, and hallucinatory effects. The album features circular structures, a fragile voice, and an intimate, poetic atmosphere—almost unreal.
Now an acclaimed painter based in Dorset, Fry was moved by the belated appreciation of his album and returned occasionally to music with subtle and introspective works: Shooting the Moon (2008) and I Lived in Trees (2011), the latter made with The A. Lords, in an ambient folk vein.
