Honey Cone est un trio vocal féminin américain formé à la fin des années 1960 à Los Angeles, en Californie. Le groupe s’illustre au début des années 1970 avec un mélange vibrant de soul, de funk, de R&B et d’influences pop, porté par des harmonies vocales puissantes et un style affirmé. Le premier album, Take Me With You (1970), constitue une œuvre emblématique de leur carrière, à la croisée du girl group traditionnel et de la modernité funky des seventies.
Le groupe est constitué de trois chanteuses :
Edna Wright (chant principal), sœur de la célèbre Darlene Love,
Shellie Clark (chant),
Carolyn Willis (chant).
Honey Cone est l’un des premiers groupes féminins à signer avec Hot Wax Records, un label fondé par les légendaires Holland-Dozier-Holland après leur départ de la Motown. Ce soutien prestigieux leur permet de bénéficier de productions sophistiquées, dans l’esprit Motown mais avec une touche plus contemporaine, proche de la scène funk émergente.
Take Me With You, sorti en 1970, révèle un son riche, à la fois rétro et novateur, avec des titres emblématiques comme Girls It Ain’t Easy, Sunday Morning People ou encore While You’re Out Looking for Sugar. L’album mêle rythmes dansants, paroles pleines de caractère, et voix soul d’une grande maîtrise.
Le succès du groupe s’est confirmé avec des hits comme One Monkey Don’t Stop No Show ou Want Ads (issu de l’album suivant), bien que leur carrière ait été relativement brève.
