🎶 Biographie (Français)

Ruphus est l’un des groupes pionniers du rock progressif norvégien, originaire d’Oslo. Fondé en 1972 par Kjell Larsen(guitare) et Asle Nilsen (basse, flûte), le groupe s’est rapidement imposé comme un acteur majeur de la scène progressive scandinave, combinant l’ambition musicale du prog britannique avec une identité nordique affirmée.

Leur premier album, New Born Day, enregistré en septembre 1973 aux Rosenborg Studios d’Oslo et publié par Polydor, est aujourd’hui considéré comme l’un des chefs-d’œuvre du rock progressif norvégien. L’album mélange habilement rock progressif, hard rock et jazz-rock, s’appuyant sur des structures complexes, des solos de guitare fougueux et un usage marquant de l’orgue Hammond.

La formation de l'époque se composait de sept musiciens talentueux, dont deux chanteurs :

• Gudny Aspaas, chanteuse à la voix puissante et expressive,

• Rune Sundby, offrant un contrepoint vocal masculin.
  Ils étaient accompagnés de :

• Hans Petter Danielsen – guitare

L’album s’ouvre sur l’énergique Coloured Dreams, parfait exemple du mélange entre riff de guitare, orgue flamboyantet ambitions progressives. D’autres titres phares, comme Scientific Ways ou Still Alive, démontrent la maîtrise du groupe dans l’art de combiner mélodies complexes et rythmiques jazzy. Des morceaux plus atmosphériques comme New Born Day ou Day After Tomorrow témoignent de leur capacité à créer des ambiances denses et immersives.

Après cet album, Ruphus a progressivement orienté sa musique vers le jazz-rock, enregistrant plusieurs disques jusqu’à sa séparation en 1981. New Born Day reste toutefois leur œuvre la plus emblématique, et un jalon incontournable du rock progressif nordique.

En 2019, le label Karisma Records a publié une réédition remasterisée de l’album, disponible en CD et vinyle 180g, contribuant à faire redécouvrir ce classique à une nouvelle génération d’amateurs de rock progressif.

Ruphus was a key figure in the development of Norwegian progressive rock, formed in 1972 in Oslo by Kjell Larsen(guitar) and Asle Nilsen (bass, flute). Combining the complexity of British prog with a distinctly Nordic flair, Ruphus quickly became a cornerstone of the Scandinavian progressive scene.

Their debut album, New Born Day, recorded in September 1973 at Oslo’s Rosenborg Studios and released by Polydor, is widely regarded as a landmark in Norwegian progressive rock. The album fuses progressive rock, hard rock, and touches of jazz-rock, with intricate song structures, searing guitar solos, and the soaring presence of the Hammond organ.

The original seven-member lineup featured two lead vocalists:

• Gudny Aspaas, a female singer with a powerful and expressive voice,

• Rune Sundby, providing a contrasting male vocal tone.
  The rest of the band included:

• Hans Petter Danielsen – guitar

• Kjell Larsen – guitar, flute

• Håkon Graf – organ, piano, vibraphone

• Asle Nilsen – bass, flute

• Thor Bendiksen – drums, percussion

The opening track Coloured Dreams sets the tone with energetic guitar riffs and bold Hammond swells. Scientific Waysand Still Alive highlight the group’s sophisticated songwriting and jazz-influenced rhythms, while the atmospheric New Born Day and Day After Tomorrow show their skill in crafting rich sonic landscapes.

Following this debut, Ruphus evolved toward a jazz-rock sound, releasing several more albums before disbanding in 1981. Despite their stylistic shifts, New Born Day remains their most iconic record, a benchmark for Norwegian progressive rock.

In 2019, Karisma Records reissued the album in a remastered edition on CD and 180g vinyl, bringing this lost classic to a new generation of prog rock listeners.
