Nicholas Rodney Drake est né le 19 juin 1948 à Rangoon, en Birmanie (actuel Myanmar), où son père travaillait pour la Burma India Trading Company. Très jeune, il s’installe avec sa famille en Angleterre, à Tanworth-in-Arden, un paisible village du Warwickshire. Il y grandit dans un environnement bourgeois et artistique : sa mère Molly composait des chansons mélancoliques au piano, annonçant en quelque sorte le style introspectif de son fils.
Nick apprend d’abord le piano, puis la clarinette, avant de se tourner vers la guitare à l’adolescence. Il développe une technique unique de fingerpicking et une passion pour les accordages alternatifs, qui deviendront sa signature musicale.
Après des études à Marlborough College, il intègre en 1967 l’université de Cambridge (Fitzwilliam College) pour y étudier la littérature anglaise. Mais très vite, la musique prend le dessus. Nick se lance dans l’écriture de chansons, influencé par Bert Jansch, Donovan, Bob Dylan, Bill Evans ou encore Debussy.
Son œuvre discographique se résume à trois albums devenus mythiques :
Five Leaves Left (1969) – Produit par Joe Boyd, ce disque marie folk, jazz et cordes élégantes. Il passe presque inaperçu à sa sortie.
Bryter Layter (1970) – Plus lumineux et pop, avec la participation de musiciens de renom comme John Cale ou Richard Thompson. Le succès commercial reste absent.
Pink Moon (1972) – Un album minimaliste et bouleversant, enregistré seul avec guitare et piano, qui sonne comme un adieu en musique.
Sombre et introverti, Nick Drake souffre de dépression chronique. Il se retire du monde, cesse de jouer en public, vit reclus dans la maison familiale. Il meurt dans la nuit du 24 au 25 novembre 1974 d’une overdose d’amitriptyline, à seulement 26 ans. Un suicide probable, mais non officiellement confirmé.
Redécouvert dans les années 1990, notamment grâce à une publicité Volkswagen utilisant "Pink Moon", il devient une icône posthume majeure du folk intimiste et mélancolique. Son influence est immense, auprès d’artistes comme Elliott Smith, Bon Iver, Beck, Iron & Wine ou Sufjan Stevens. Aujourd’hui, Nick Drake est considéré comme l’un des plus grands songwriters du XXe siècle.

The family soon returned to England and settled in the peaceful village of Tanworth-in-Arden, Warwickshire. Nick grew up in a cultured and artistic environment—his mother, Molly, composed melancholic piano songs, foreshadowing the introspective style he would later adopt.
Nick first learned piano, then clarinet, before taking up the guitar in his teens. He developed a distinctive fingerpicking style and a passion for alternate tunings, which became a hallmark of his sound.
After attending Marlborough College, he enrolled at Cambridge University in 1967 (Fitzwilliam College) to study English literature. But music gradually took precedence, and he began writing songs influenced by Bert Jansch, Donovan, Bob Dylan, Bill Evans, and Debussy.
