A Band Called O est un groupe britannique formé au début des années 70, dont le parcours artistique s’étale de 1970 à 1977. Avant d’adopter ce nom, les musiciens opéraient sous l’appellation The Parlour Band, originaire de Jersey (îles Anglo-Normandes). Leur premier album, Is a Friend? (1972), témoigne d’un rock progressif mélodique raffiné, aujourd’hui prisé par les collectionneurs.

Après des changements de line-up et un déménagement sur le continent, le groupe devient successivement The O Band puis A Band Called O pour des raisons contractuelles. Avec ce nouveau nom, ils se dirigent vers un style plus accessible, oscillant entre rock mélodique, soft rock, space rock et pop progressive. Leur identité musicale reste pourtant singulière et ancrée dans la scène britannique du milieu des années 70.

Leur premier album sous ce nom, O, paraît en 1974 chez Epic Records. Il marque une évolution sonore marquée par des harmonies vocales soignées, l’usage subtil de la flûte et du Mellotron, et une production limpide. Le disque évoque des influences telles que 10cc, Supertramp, Camel ou encore Brinsley Schwarz, tout en affirmant une personnalité propre.

A Band Called O was a British band active from 1970 to 1977. Initially known as The Parlour Band from Jersey (Channel Islands), their 1972 debut Is a Friend? reflected a melodic progressive rock style that has since become a sought-after collector’s item.

After some lineup changes and a move to mainland England, the group rebranded first as The O Band and later as A Band Called O for contractual reasons. This marked a shift towards a more accessible musical direction, blending melodic rock, soft rock, space rock, and progressive pop—yet always retaining a distinct sound rooted in the 1970s British scene.

Their first album under the new name, O, was released in 1974 on Epic Records. It showcased refined vocal harmonies, gentle use of flute and Mellotron, and a crisp production style. The album draws comparisons to bands like 10cc, Supertramp, Camel, and Brinsley Schwarz while maintaining its own identity.

Despite never achieving major commercial success, A Band Called O earned critical respect and a devoted following. Their music remains appreciated by fans of sophisticated British soft prog rock.
