Crawler est un groupe de rock britannique formé en 1976, dans les mois suivant le décès de Paul Kossoff, guitariste légendaire de Free et membre fondateur de Back Street Crawler. Né de l’héritage de ce dernier, Crawler développe une fusion remarquable entre hard rock, blues-rock et soul-funk, portée par une grande maturité musicale.
Les débuts remontent à Back Street Crawler, qui publie deux albums (The Band Plays On, 1975 et 2nd Street, 1976) teintés de rock mélancolique et de blues. Le 19 mars 1976, Paul Kossoff meurt tragiquement à l’âge de 25 ans. Les autres membres du groupe refusent de mettre fin à l’aventure, et décident de poursuivre sous un nouveau nom : Crawler. Ce changement marque une étape symbolique, affirmant leur volonté d’émancipation artistique, tout en restant fidèles à l’esprit de leur ancien camarade.

Crawler was a British rock band formed in 1976, shortly after the death of legendary Free guitarist Paul Kossoff, who had led Back Street Crawler. Rising from the ashes of that band, Crawler created a unique blend of hard rock, blues-rock, and soul-funk, delivering a sound both powerful and sophisticated.
Originally part of Back Street Crawler, the group released two albums (The Band Plays On, 1975 and 2nd Street, 1976). After Kossoff’s tragic death in March 1976 at age 25, the surviving members chose to carry on under the new name Crawler, signaling a fresh chapter while still honoring their origins.
The band featured seasoned musicians:
Terry Wilson-Slesser (vocals, formerly of Beckett),
Geoff Whitehorn (guitar, formerly of If, stepping in for Kossoff),
Terry Wilson (bass),
Tony Braunagel (drums),
John "Rabbit" Bundrick (keyboards, later a frequent collaborator with The Who).
Their debut album Crawler (1977), released by Epic Records, featured searing guitar riffs, soulful vocals, funky grooves, and rich keyboard textures. The track Stone Cold Sober enjoyed modest success in the U.S. The album strikes a fine balance between rock power and soulful depth.
Though Crawler didn’t achieve major commercial success—especially in Europe—they found a strong following in the U.S., touring with acts like Foreigner and Robin Trower. Their second album, Snake, Rattle & Roll (1978), explored funkier and more daring territory, showcasing the band’s versatility.
Today, Crawler is seen as one of the most underrated British rock bands of the late 1970s, praised for their emotional power and musical finesse.
