Formé en 1976 à Macon, Géorgie, Sea Level est un groupe de rock américain issu de la dissolution de l'Allman Brothers Band. Le groupe naît du trio "We Three", composé de Chuck Leavell (claviers, chant), Lamar Williams (basse) et Jai Johanny Johanson (batterie), tous anciens membres des Allman Brothers. Ils sont rejoints par le guitariste Jimmy Nalls, et le nom "Sea Level" est un jeu de mots phonétique sur le nom de Leavell.
Leur premier album éponyme, sorti en 1977 sur le label Capricorn Records, mêle rock sudiste, jazz fusion, funk et blues.Produit par Stewart Levine, l'album présente des compositions originales de Leavell, ainsi que des reprises de Neil Larsen ("Grand Larceny") et de Simon & Garfunkel ("Scarborough Fair"). Ce premier opus est salué pour sa créativité et son énergie.
Le groupe s'élargit ensuite avec l'ajout de Randall Bramblett (saxophone, claviers, chant), Davis Causey (guitare) et George Weaver (batterie), et sort plusieurs albums au cours des années suivantes, dont Cats on the Coast (1978), On the Edge (1978), Long Walk on a Short Pier (1979) et Ball Room (1980).
