Formé en 1968 à Coventry, en Angleterre, Dando Shaft est un groupe de folk progressif et de folk jazz, reconnu comme l'un des fers de lance de la scène folk britannique des années 1970. Le groupe naît du duo formé par Kevin Dempsey (guitare, chant) et Dave Cooper (guitare, chant), rejoints par Martin Jenkins (mandoline, violon, flûte), Roger Bullen (contrebasse) et Ted Kay (tabla, percussion). Le nom du groupe est inspiré du personnage principal du roman Shaft de Don Calhoun.

En 1970, Dando Shaft enregistre son premier album, An Evening With Dando Shaft, pour le label Young Blood. Cet album, entièrement acoustique et sans batterie, se distingue par son atmosphère rustique et sa richesse instrumentale, mêlant influences folk traditionnelles anglaises, structures rythmiques balkaniques et arrangements progressifs. La voix expressive de Polly Bolton, qui rejoint le groupe en 1970, ajoute une dimension supplémentaire à leur son unique.

Malgré des critiques élogieuses, le groupe ne rencontre pas un grand succès commercial. Ils signent ensuite avec le label Neon (RCA) et publient Dando Shaft en 1971, suivi de Lantaloon en 1972. Après une séparation en 1973, le groupe se reforme brièvement en 1977 pour l'album Kingdom, plus électrique et expérimental. En 1989, Dando Shaft se réunit pour une série de concerts en Italie, donnant lieu à l'album live Shadows Across the Moon.

Formed in 1968 in Coventry, England, Dando Shaft was a progressive folk and folk jazz band recognized as a leading force in the British folk scene of the 1970s. The band originated from the duo of Kevin Dempsey (guitar, vocals) and Dave Cooper (guitar, vocals), later joined by Martin Jenkins (mandolin, violin, flute), Roger Bullen (double bass), and Ted Kay (tabla, percussion). The band's name was inspired by the main character in Don Calhoun's novel Shaft.

In 1970, Dando Shaft recorded their debut album, An Evening With Dando Shaft, for the Young Blood label. This album, entirely acoustic and without drums, stands out for its rustic atmosphere and rich instrumentation, blending traditional English folk influences, Balkan rhythmic structures, and progressive arrangements. The expressive voice of Polly Bolton, who joined the band in 1970, added an additional dimension to their unique sound.

Despite critical acclaim, the band did not achieve significant commercial success. They then signed with the Neon (RCA) label and released Dando Shaft in 1971, followed by Lantaloon in 1972. After disbanding in 1973, the band briefly reunited in 1977 for the album Kingdom, which was more electric and experimental. In 1989, Dando Shaft reunited for a series of concerts in Italy, resulting in the live album Shadows Across the Moon.
