Formé à Londres en 1968, Egg est un trio britannique emblématique de la scène progressive, souvent associé à l'école de Canterbury. Composé de Dave Stewart (orgue, piano), Mont Campbell (basse, chant) et Clive Brooks (batterie), le groupe se distingue par une approche musicale audacieuse mêlant rock, jazz, musique classique et expérimentations sonores.

Après un premier album éponyme en 1970, Egg enregistre The Polite Force, sorti en février 1971 sur le label Deram. Cet opus marque une évolution vers des compositions plus ambitieuses et complexes, intégrant des influences de Stravinsky et des structures proches de la musique de chambre. L'album se caractérise par des pièces instrumentales élaborées, des textures sonores riches et une utilisation inventive des claviers.

Malgré une reconnaissance critique, le groupe peine à obtenir un succès commercial et se sépare en 1972. Dave Stewart poursuivra sa carrière au sein de formations majeures du mouvement Canterbury, telles que Hatfield and the North et National Health.

Formed in London in 1968, Egg was a British trio emblematic of the progressive scene, often associated with the Canterbury school. Consisting of Dave Stewart (organ, piano), Mont Campbell (bass, vocals), and Clive Brooks (drums), the band stood out for its bold musical approach blending rock, jazz, classical music, and sonic experimentation.

After a self-titled debut album in 1970, Egg recorded The Polite Force, released in February 1971 on the Deram label.This work marked a shift towards more ambitious and complex compositions, incorporating Stravinsky influences and chamber music-like structures. The album is characterized by elaborate instrumental pieces, rich sonic textures, and inventive use of keyboards.

Despite critical acclaim, the band struggled to achieve commercial success and disbanded in 1972. Dave Stewart continued his career with major Canterbury movement bands such as Hatfield and the North and National Health.
