Paul Kantner, cofondateur de Jefferson Airplane, publie en 1970 son premier album solo, Blows Against the Empire, crédité à "Paul Kantner et Jefferson Starship". Cet album-concept de science-fiction raconte l’histoire de révolutionnaires qui détournent un vaisseau spatial pour fuir un monde oppressif et créer une utopie ailleurs. L’album est notable pour avoir été le premier disque de rock nominé pour un prix Hugo, dans la catégorie « Meilleure présentation dramatique ». Il est également le premier à utiliser le nom "Jefferson Starship", qui sera repris par Kantner et Grace Slick pour former un groupe à part entière quelques années plus tard.

Paul Kantner, co-founder of Jefferson Airplane, released his debut solo album in 1970, Blows Against the Empire, credited to "Paul Kantner and Jefferson Starship". This concept album of science fiction tells the story of revolutionaries who hijack a spaceship to escape an oppressive world and create a utopia elsewhere. The album is notable for being the first rock record nominated for a Hugo Award in the "Best Dramatic Presentation" category. It is also the first to use the name "Jefferson Starship", which Kantner and Grace Slick would later adopt to form a full-fledged band.
