Formé en 1966 à Londres sous le nom de The Social Deviants, le groupe adopte rapidement le nom The Deviants. Mené par le chanteur et écrivain Mick Farren, le groupe s'inscrit dans la scène underground britannique, mêlant rock psychédélique, garage rock et proto-punk. Leur troisième album, The Deviants (également connu sous le titre The Deviants #3), est sorti en 1969. Cet album marque une divergence artistique entre Farren et les autres membres, ces derniers souhaitant s'orienter vers un son plus proche de Led Zeppelin. Peu après la sortie de l'album, le groupe se sépare, et les membres restants forment le groupe Pink Fairies.

Formed in 1966 in London as The Social Deviants, the band soon became known as The Deviants. Led by singer and writer Mick Farren, the group was part of the British underground scene, blending psychedelic rock, garage rock, and proto-punk. Their third album, The Deviants (also known as The Deviants #3), was released in 1969. This album marked an artistic divergence between Farren and the other members, who wanted to pursue a sound closer to Led Zeppelin.Shortly after the album's release, the band disbanded, and the remaining members formed the group Pink Fairies.
