Cependant, toutes les chansons, sans exception, ont un dénominateur commun : Bob Weir à l'écriture, seul (One More Saturday Night), en co-écriture, avec John Perry Barlow, l'ami d'enfance et complice de toujours (5 titres), ou avec Mickey Hart et Robert Hunter, autres Dead. Sept des huit pistes d'Ace devenant par la suite des standards du répertoire de Grateful Dead, c'est dire la pertinence de cet album et sa qualité. Propre, lumineux, solide, cohérent, Ace comporte les meilleures chansons de Bob Weir : Greatest Story Ever Told, Playing In The Band, Mexicali Blues, Cassidy, Black Throated Wind, Looks Like Rain, One More Saturday Night. La présence du Dead est une indéniable plus-value et contribue à en faire un disque formidable pour Bob Weir, allant au-delà de ses espérances. L'histoire est belle.
