Après le succès critique de Broken English (1979), Marianne Faithfull revient en 1981 avec Dangerous Acquaintances, un album au ton plus policé, orienté vers un rock new wave moins abrasif. Si certains critiques ont regretté l’abandon partiel de la noirceur brutale de son précédent opus, l’album n’en reste pas moins riche en atmosphères troubles et en compositions solides. Le titre fait allusion au roman Les Liaisons dangereuses, et explore, comme souvent chez Faithfull, les tensions entre amour, dépendance et résilience. Sa voix grave, marquée par les excès, demeure l’instrument central de cette œuvre introspective.

Pas facile de faire mieux après le merveilleux 'Broken English' où Marianne avait tout simplement inventé un genre, une forme féministe du rock, dure, adulte, sensuelle... Et elle a réussi! En 1980, 'Dangerous Acquaintances' met une fois de plus les pendules à l'heure. Sweetheart, un reggae sans concession est la meilleure chanson de Marianne Faithfull. Le son est léché, meilleur que sur 'Broken English', le groupe derrière a mille idées et mille innovations. 25 ans après, ce disque n'a pas pris une ride. Sur la pochette, Marianne, belle à s'en mordre les poings, regarde droit dans les yeux et livre sans complexe ses meilleures compositions.

Following the dark brilliance of Broken English (1979), Marianne Faithfull released Dangerous Acquaintances in 1981. The album takes a smoother, more accessible new wave direction, toning down the abrasive punk and dub influences of its predecessor. Although the shift in style received mixed critical response, Faithfull’s raw, emotive voice continues to convey a haunting sense of vulnerability and strength. With lyrical themes of romantic disillusionment and existential searching, the record confirms her place as a complex and fearless artist.

Not easy to do better after the wonderful 'Broken English' where Marianne had just invented a genre, a feminist form of rock, hard, adult, sensual ... And she succeeded! In 1980, 'Dangerous Acquaintances' met once again the record straight. Sweetheart, uncompromising reggae is the best song of Marianne Faithfull. The sound is licked, better than on 'Broken English', the group behind a thousand thousand ideas and innovations. 25 years later, this record has not aged. On the cover, Marianne, nice to bite into fists, looking straight in the eye and without complex book his best compositions.
