Love it to death is a great rock record. There are pieces rhythmic and catchy ( 'Caught In A Dream', 'Long Way To Go'), the dark and disturbing rivers securities ( 'Black Juju', 'Ballad Of Dwight Fry'), the rigor tube ( ' I'm Eighteen '), calm and melodic passage (' Second Coming '), the sexy devil song ( "Is it My Body') and even a foray into the world music (the resumption of Rolf Harris 'Sun Arise' ). All it takes in new tracks and less than 40 minutes. Despite this variety, love it to death is listening to a block with obvious consistency, so that the last 3 titles keep coming and seem into one. The group also presents a universe spun into lyrics that oscillate between ego-trip, morbid images, subjective views, and Christ-references. In 1971, Alice Cooper is a group, which builds an image in the second degree grand guignol, which relates more glam than hard rock and is much closer to that of Zappa or Bowie Black Sabbath. Yet we can say that love it to death is a work of avant-garde that is the cornerstone of a style, since it is a rare manifestation of glam to the US.
Love It To Death est un très bon disque de rock. Il y a les morceaux rythmés et entraînants ('Caught In A Dream', 'Long Way To Go'), les titres fleuves sombres et inquiétants ('Black Juju', 'Ballad Of Dwight Fry'), le tube de rigueur ('I'm Eighteen'), le passage calme et mélodique ('Second Coming'), la chanson sexy en diable ('Is It My Body') et même une incursion dans la world music (la reprise de Rolf Harris 'Sun Arise'). Tout ce qu'il faut en neuf titres et moins de 40 minutes.
Malgré cette variété, Love It To Death s'écoute d'un bloc, avec une cohérence évidente, au point que les 3 derniers titres s'enchainent et semblent n'en faire qu'un. Le groupe présente aussi un univers propre, filé dans des paroles qui oscillent entre ego-trip, images morbides, vues subjectives, et références christiques. En 1971, Alice Cooper est un groupe, qui se construit une image second degré dans le grand-guignol, qui se rattache plus au glam qu'au hard-rock et qui est bien plus proche de Zappa ou Bowie que de Black Sabbath. On peut pourtant dire que Love It To Death est une oeuvre avant-gardiste qui constitue la pierre angulaire d'un style, puisqu'il s'agit d'une des rares manifestations du glam à l'américaine. Mais Love It To Death est avant tout un bon disque de rock. Un grand disque de rock.
