Formé en 1968 à Harlow (Angleterre) par les frères Norman et Garth Watt‑Roy, rejoints par Colin Horton‑Jennings, Mick Deacon, Ron Prudence et la section cuivre Dick Hanson, Tex Phillpotts, Ian Aitcheson, The Greatest Show On Earth fut conçu par le label Harvest pour rivaliser avec Chicago ou Blood, Sweat & Tears.
Enregistré à Abbey Road en octobre 1969 et sorti au printemps 1970, Horizons mélangeait jazz-rock, funk, soul et prog aux rythmes vivants, harmonies vocales soignées, orgue et cuivres puissants . Avec un design signé Hipgnosis et le single Real Cool World, l’album rencontre un succès modéré en Europe (n°7 aux Pays-Bas), mais reste ignoré au Royaume-Unid.

Formed in Harlow, UK in 1968 by Norman and Garth Watt‑Roy and joined by Colin Horton‑Jennings, Mick Deacon, Ron Prudence, and a brass section featuring Dick Hanson, Tex Phillpotts, and Ian Aitcheson, The Greatest Show On Earth was Harvest’s answer to Chicago/BST.
Recorded at Abbey Road in October 1969 and released in spring 1970, Horizons fused funk-tinged jazz rock, soul, and progressive elements, featuring strong brass, Hammond organ, and vocal harmoniesd. With its Hipgnosis sleeve and the single Real Cool World, it became a hit in parts of Europe (#7 in the Netherlands), yet sank in the UK.
