IQ - The Road Of Bones (2015)

Composed of five titles in his long and simple version of six songs in both its versions; The Road Of Bones is a record that needs many listenings to be appreciated at its true value. From the stunning opening track entitled 'From The Outside', the tone is set: dark atmospheres at will, big guitars of Mike Holmes and rhythmic fabulous with a special prize to Tim Esau, play brilliantly combines power and subtlety. It is clear: IQ leads us straight on the road to hell paved with good intentions. The next track, 'The Road Of Bones' opens with a masterful introduction signed Neil Durant (suicidal large tablecloths, sounds unreal) relayed by the splendid singing and while retaining Peter Nicholls. Neurasthenic refrain! Then bass to Colin Edwin (Porcupine Tree) Tim Esau opens the doors to a hypnotic melody that wish goosebumps file. This just before the oriental sounds of keyboards lead to true apotheosis: Rhythmic powerful, masterful layers of synths, remarkable bass voice literally inhabited. As for the guitar of Mike, though mixed slightly off, it gives the this piece of bravery. Then comes the turn of 'Without Walls', with once again a superb job of Neil During the piano, tablecloths and samples. The next song, 'Ocean', opens with the notes of a music box. Sublimated again by a beautiful piano sensitivity and with a song on edge, soon joined by a delicate acoustic guitar and a bass absolutely beautiful (Tim really play as well as John Jowitt: great performance), it has all the ingredients needed to make a great song. Then comes the time of the coda with 'Until The End'. haunting vocals and harmonies are new and strange, from the first steps, anticipate a renewal of power (albeit moderate, eh, would see not to change a winning formula) very attractive for the future. A great success over ending sequence on an acoustic guitar / piano / absolutely beautiful voice brings tears to my eyes. For the rest, the compositions literally dripping synthesizers and especially vintage organs: the liturgy, the Hammond, the mellotroniens, etc ...: So throw an ear on the epic 'Constellations'. In the end, with 'The Road Of Bones', it stands there an album otherwise fly high, at least of excellent craftsmanship.

Dès le magnifique morceau d’ouverture intitulé 'From The Outside ', le ton est donné : atmosphères ténébreuses à souhait, grosses guitares de Mike Holmes et rythmique d’enfer avec une palme spéciale à Tim Esau, au jeu alliant brillamment puissance et subtilité. C’est clair : IQ nous entraine d’emblée sur les routes d’un enfer pavé de bonnes intentions. Le titre suivant, 'The Road Of Bones', s’ouvre sur une introduction magistrale signée Neil Durant (grandes nappes suicidaires, bruitages irréels) relayée par le chant splendide et tout en retenue de Peter Nicholls. Neurasthéniques s’abstenir ! Puis la basse à la Colin Edwin (Porcupine Tree) de Tim Esau ouvre les portes à une mélodie hypnotique à souhait qui file la chair de poule. Ceci juste avant que des sonorités orientales de claviers débouchent sur une véritable apothéose : rythmique puissante, nappes magistrales de synthés, basse remarquable, vocaux littéralement habités. Quant à la guitare de Mike, quoique mixée légèrement en retrait, elle donne le la à cette pièce de bravoure. Vient alors le tour de 'Without Walls', avec encore une fois un superbe travail de Neil Durant au piano, aux nappes et aux samples.
La chanson suivante, 'Ocean', s’ouvre sur les notes d’une boite à musique. Sublimée une fois encore par un piano magnifique de sensibilité et par un chant à fleur de peau, vite rejoints par une guitare acoustique délicate et par une basse absolument magnifique (Tim joue vraiment aussi bien que John Jowitt : sacrée performance !), elle possède tous les ingrédients nécessaires à la confection d’un grand morceau. Puis vient l’heure de la coda avec 'Until The End'. Chant lancinant et harmonies inédites et étranges font, dès les premières mesures, pressentir un pouvoir de renouvellement (certes modéré, hein, faudrait voir à ne pas changer une formule qui gagne) fort alléchante pour la suite. Une belle réussite de plus qui s’achève sur une séquence guitare acoustique/piano/voix absolument magnifique qui fait monter les larmes aux yeux.
Pour le reste, les compositions dégoulinent littéralement de synthétiseurs et plus particulièrement d’orgues vintage : le liturgique, l’Hammond, les mellotroniens, etc… : jetez donc une oreille attentive sur l’epic 'Constellations'. Au final, avec 'The Road Of Bones', on tient là un  album sinon de haute volée , tout au moins d'excellente facture.
