Shagrat était un supergroupe britannique formé en février 1970 par Steve Peregrin Took et Mick Farren, après leur séparation avec Twink, leur partenaire dans le prototype du supergroupe Pink Fairies de fin 1969. Ils ont recruté Larry Wallis (guitare, chœurs) et Tim Taylor (basse), anciens membres de The Entire Sioux Nation. Farren a quitté le groupe peu après sa formation et n'a jamais enregistré avec eux. Le groupe a enregistré des démos en 1970, dont certaines ont été publiées plus tard. Le nom "Shagrat" provient d'un personnage orc du Seigneur des Anneaux de J.R.R. Tolkien et était une contraction de "Shagrat the Vagrant", le nom sous lequel Took avait été crédité sur l'album Mona – The Carnivorous Circus de Mick Farren.

Shagrat was a British supergroup formed in February 1970 by Steve Peregrin Took and Mick Farren after their split with Twink, their partner in the prototype Pink Fairies supergroup of late 1969. They recruited Larry Wallis (guitar, backing vocals) and Tim Taylor (bass), formerly of The Entire Sioux Nation. Farren left the band shortly after its formation and never recorded with them. The band recorded demos in 1970, some of which were later released. The name "Shagrat" comes from an orc character in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and was a contraction of "Shagrat the Vagrant," the name under which Took had been credited on Mick Farren's album Mona – The Carnivorous Circus.
