Swampwater était un groupe américain de country rock formé en 1969 à Los Angeles. Initialement, le groupe a servi de groupe d’accompagnement pour Linda Ronstadt après sa séparation des Stone Poneys. Le groupe se composait de John Beland (guitare, chant), Gib Guilbeau (violon cajun, guitare, chant), Eric White (basse) et Stan Pratt (batterie). Plus tard, Eric White, le frère de Clarence White des Byrds, a été remplacé par Thad Maxwell à la basse.

En 1971, Swampwater publie son premier album éponyme sous le label Starday King Records. Enregistré en seulement quatre jours au Nouveau-Mexique, cet album marie habilement le country rock californien, les influences cajun et le swamp rock, un mélange propre à l’héritage musical de Gib Guilbeau. Parmi les titres mémorables, on trouve "Ooh-Wee California", "Mama Lou" et "Headed for the Country".

Suite à cet album, le groupe continue sa collaboration avec Linda Ronstadt et fait une apparition notable dans The Johnny Cash Show en 1971, ce qui leur permet de signer un contrat avec RCA Records. Ils enregistrent un deuxième album, également intitulé "Swampwater", à Hollywood et Nashville, avec des musiciens invités tels que les guitaristes à pédale Curly Chalker et Jimmy Day. Malgré des critiques positives, le groupe n’atteint pas le succès commercial espéré et se sépare en 1972.

Après la dissolution du groupe, plusieurs de ses membres, notamment John Beland et Gib Guilbeau, rejoignent les Flying Burrito Brothers, contribuant à des succès dans la scène country des années 1980.

Swampwater was an American country rock band formed in 1969 in Los Angeles. Initially, they served as the backup band for Linda Ronstadt after her split from the Stone Poneys. The group consisted of John Beland (guitar, vocals), Gib Guilbeau (cajun fiddle, guitar, vocals), Eric White (bass), and Stan Pratt (drums). Later, Eric White, the brother of Clarence White of the Byrds, was replaced by Thad Maxwell on bass.

In 1971, Swampwater released their self-titled debut album under the Starday King Records label. Recorded in just four days in New Mexico, the album blends California country rock, Cajun influences, and swamp rock, reflecting Gib Guilbeau's musical heritage. Memorable tracks include "Ooh-Wee California", "Mama Lou", and "Headed for the Country".

Following the release of the album, the band continued to collaborate with Linda Ronstadt and made an appearance on The Johnny Cash Show in 1971, leading to a contract with RCA Records. They then recorded a second album, also titled "Swampwater", in Hollywood and Nashville, with guest musicians such as steel guitarists Curly Chalker and Jimmy Day. Despite positive reviews, the band did not achieve commercial success and disbanded in 1972.

After the group’s breakup, several members, including John Beland and Gib Guilbeau, went on to join the Flying Burrito Brothers, contributing to several successful country albums in the 1980s.
