John Buck Wilkin, né le 26 avril 1946 à Tulsa, Oklahoma, et décédé le 6 avril 2024 près de Linden, Tennessee, était un auteur-compositeur-interprète américain. Fils de la célèbre parolière Marijohn Wilkin, il a grandi dans un environnement musical riche. Dès l'âge de huit ans, il se produit dans l'émission télévisée Ozark Jubilee aux côtés de Brenda Lee.
Adolescent, Wilkin forme le groupe Ronny & the Daytonas, adoptant le pseudonyme de Ronny Dayton. En 1964, le groupe connaît un succès retentissant avec le single G.T.O., écrit par Wilkin, qui atteint la 4ᵉ place du Billboard Hot 100. Ce titre devient emblématique de la culture automobile américaine des années 1960.

John Buck Wilkin, born April 26, 1946, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and passed away on April 6, 2024, near Linden, Tennessee, was an American singer-songwriter. The son of renowned songwriter Marijohn Wilkin, he was raised in a rich musical environment. At the age of eight, he performed on the Ozark Jubilee TV show alongside Brenda Lee.
As a teenager, Wilkin formed the band Ronny & the Daytonas, adopting the stage name Ronny Dayton. In 1964, the group had a major hit with G.T.O., written by Wilkin, which reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became a symbol of 1960s American car culture.
In 1970, Wilkin launched a solo career and released In Search of Food, Clothing, Shelter and Sex under Liberty Records. Recorded at the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, the album blends original songs and covers, marked by a reflective tone and a distinct folk-rock sound. Among its highlights is The Daydream, showcasing Wilkin’s artistic sensitivity.
In 1971, he appeared in Dennis Hopper’s film The Last Movie, contributing to its soundtrack. Later, he worked as a session guitarist with artists like Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson, with whom he shared a Nashville apartment in the 1960s.
