Dennis Coffey est un guitariste américain né le 11 novembre 1940 à Détroit, Michigan. Dès l’adolescence, il explore une variété de genres musicaux – rock, jazz, blues et country – et devient dans les années 1960 un musicien de studio très demandé. Il se distingue notamment au sein des Funk Brothers, la formation de session du label Motown, en signant des parties de guitare remarquables sur des titres comme "Cloud Nine" des Temptations ou "It's Your Thing" des Isley Brothers.
En 1969, Dennis Coffey fonde le Dennis Coffey Trio, avec Lyman Woodard à l’orgue et Melvin Davis à la batterie. Ensemble, ils enregistrent l’album Hair and Thangs, un projet audacieux nourri par l’esthétique psychédélique de la fin des sixties.
Le disque propose des reprises funky et psychédéliques de chansons issues de la comédie musicale Hair (notamment "Let the Sunshine In" et "Aquarius"), ainsi que des versions instrumentales de classiques comme "Hey Jude" des Beatles ou "It's Your Thing" des Isley Brothers.
L’album est une fusion innovante de rock psychédélique, funk et soul, magnifiée par le jeu de guitare expressif de Coffey, usant du wah-wah, de la distorsion, et d’autres effets avant-gardistes pour l’époque. Lyman Woodard, organiste du trio, était lui aussi une figure centrale de la scène jazz-funk de Détroit.

Dennis Coffey is an American guitarist born on November 11, 1940, in Detroit, Michigan. He began playing guitar at the age of thirteen and quickly immersed himself in rock 'n' roll, jazz, blues, and country. During the 1960s, he became a sought-after session musician, contributing to numerous recordings for the Motown label. Coffey is especially known for his work with the Funk Brothers, Motown’s house band, where his guitar work enhanced iconic tracks like "Cloud Nine"by The Temptations and "It's Your Thing" by The Isley Brothers.
In 1969, Coffey formed the Dennis Coffey Trio, featuring Lyman Woodard on organ and Melvin Davis on drums. The trio released Hair and Thangs, a psychedelic-funk album that creatively reimagines several songs from the musical Hair, including "Let the Sunshine In" and "Aquarius", alongside instrumental renditions of "Hey Jude" and "It's Your Thing".
The album stands out for its fusion of psychedelic rock and deep funk, with Coffey's distinctive guitar work—marked by wah-wah effects and innovative tones—at the forefront. Organist Lyman Woodard was also a prominent figure in Detroit’s jazz scene, known for his work with the Lyman Woodard Organization.
Although Hair and Thangs didn’t gain major commercial traction upon release, it has since achieved cult status, praised for its adventurous blend of styles. The album has been reissued multiple times, most recently in 2022 by Big Pink Records.
