Formed in 1966 at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, Mad River relocated to Berkeley, California, in 1967, quickly becoming part of the West Coast psychedelic scene. Their self-titled debut album (1968) was noted for its dark intensity and complex structures. With Paradise Bar and Grill, their second and final album released in 1969 on Capitol Records, the band adopted a more relaxed approach, blending psychedelic rock, folk, and country influences. The album reflects a shift toward more accessible sounds while maintaining lyrical and musical depth. Despite positive reviews, the band disbanded shortly after the album's release.
