Sassafras est un groupe de rock gallois formé en 1970 à Cardiff. Le groupe a été fondé par le guitariste Ralph Evans, le bassiste Ricky John Holt et le batteur Rob Reynolds. Ils ont rapidement été rejoints par le guitariste David "Dai" Shell et le chanteur Terry Bennett. Après le départ de Reynolds, le groupe a recruté Bob "Congo" Jones (ancien membre de Love Sculpture) à la batterie. En 1972, ils ont signé un contrat avec AIR Productions de George Martin et ont enregistré leur premier album, Expecting Company, sorti en 1973 sur le label Polydor.

L'album présente une fusion de rock dur, de boogie, de blues et de psychédélisme, avec des influences de groupes tels que Wishbone Ash et Uriah Heep. Le groupe a acquis une réputation pour ses performances énergiques en concert, établissant un record britannique en 1973 avec 332 concerts en 365 jours. Malgré une reconnaissance critique, Sassafras n'a pas réussi à percer commercialement et s'est dissous en 1977.
