Brian Cookman, né le 22 novembre 1946 en Inde, était un musicien britannique, compositeur, artiste graphique et enseignant de tai-chi, connu pour son approche unique du blues Delta et de la musique de jug band. Artiste polyvalent et esprit libre, il a laissé une empreinte singulière sur la scène folk et blues britannique.
🎵 Débuts et Jug Trust :
Après des études en design graphique à la Harrow School of Art, Cookman travaille chez EMI à la promotion musicale, tout en se produisant dans des clubs folk le soir. En 1962, il fonde le trio Jug Trust, qui revisite avec enthousiasme le répertoire oublié du jug band, influencé par des pionniers comme Gus Cannon's Jug Stompers et le Memphis Jug Band.

🎵 Early Career & Jug Trust:
After studying graphic design at Harrow School of Art, Cookman joined EMI in music promotion while playing folk clubs at night. In 1962, he formed the trio Jug Trust, bringing obscure jug band classics back to life, inspired by acts like Memphis Jug Band and Gus Cannon’s Jug Stompers.
🎸 Bronx Cheer:
Jug Trust evolved into Bronx Cheer, a more commercially oriented band with full instrumentation (keys, bass, drums). They released an album with a tongue-in-cheek title, Bronx Cheer's Greatest Hits, Volume Three, plus a single and an EP.
🎤 The Brian Cookman Band:
Later, Cookman formed The Brian Cookman Band with Rob Hull (former guitarist for Chicken Shack). The group toured with Gallagher and Lyle, but internal management issues led Cookman to take a break from the music industry.
💿 Solo Album – Grinnin’ (1981):
Returning to folk circuits, he released his only solo album, Grinnin’, in 1981. The record showcases his signature mix of blues, wit, and musical dexterity.
🕊️ Passing:
Brian Cookman passed away from cancer on February 18, 2005. He was buried in a biodegradable coffin, and friends celebrated his life with a wake held in a brewery, a fitting tribute to his unconventional and joyful spirit.
